Baby Names

What do you think of the name Keller?

Do you think of a boy or girl? We have had an awful time coming up with a name for baby #2 and our second boy. Our first is Casey. Our criteria is not trendy, easy pronounceable, masculine but soft and not overdone. Keller is my great-grandmother's maiden name which makes it kinda cool. He would be Keller Thomas...from what we can tell it's not even on the charts! What do you think?

ETA: I'd def think it was a boys name.

  • I think it's cute, but it reminds me of Helen Keller. I don't think that's a bad association.

  • I'm not a fan. I like that it's a family name. However, I speak German and Keller means basement/cellar (and is used in everyday language as such). Could you use it as a mn? Suggestions: Cary, Calvin, Corbin.

  • Personally. I would make it a middle name. Keller sounds weird as a first name, even though I know it has family significance.

  • I like it. Another similar option: Kyler. If it's a family name, I'd use it either as a fn or mn.

I immediately thought of Hellen Keller too. I also wonder how often he would be called "Killer" on the playground.

    what about...
    Colton
    Keelan
    Cade
    Corbin

  • I like Keller. Especially with the family connection.. But I'm one of the few that doesn't mind ln's as fn's. I don't mind some of the other suggestions, but Keller's not popular so I like it more!

I don't *love* last names that people try to dress up as first names, but I tend to give family names passes.

I agree. When I saw the post subject I immediately thought "last name" but I don't mind it when there is family significance. Also, definitely a boys name. I can't see it on a girl at all so no worries there.

This. I don't mind it for the FN, although if it were me I'd use it for the MN

  • I think boy, and I think the name is just ok. I was a big hippie in college and went to a few shows of a musician named Keller Williams so thats what I think of.

  • Helen keller or keller Williams are the first 2 things that popped into my mind.

id like it as middle name

This but as a first name I think of a boy.
  • Thanks guys! Those were exactly some of my concerns. My name is Katie and DH is David so were both not wanting him to always have to be just one of the kids in his class to have that name-but don't want it to be a name where he's always asked "wow that's interesting...where did that come from?!"
  • Every name is going to have some kind of association for most people... there's nothing so bad about Keller you couldn't use it. KWIM?

  • I had a student named Keller... it suited him well! I like it :)
  • I think it does come off as a bit trendy since it seems like so many babies are being given surnames as first names. I also immediately thought of Helen Keller and the nn Killer. I like that its a family name, but I'd personally put it in the mn spot. There are loads of unique but lesser used, normal boys names out there I prefer.

I think boy, but I think Killer when I see it. Although I pronounce I and E differently, I'm reminded of those posts where people with certain accents claim the words 'pin' and 'pen' sound exactly the same. Not a big fan.

    I love Casey though!

  • Definitely different... But I like using family names. They have more meaning and are special.
