STMs...toddler fever over 104..

DD has been sick since Thursday night...the third kid to be sick at our home daycare (5 kids total). Friday her fevers were mostly below, but around, 103. Fever broke 1 am Saturday but returned later that morning. Saturday it remained but hovered lower...mostly under 102. DD had decent day except for being tired...ate some lunch and dinner (light but something) and played happily most of the day. Fever didn't even spike in the evening like it tends to do.

Now she just woke up with a fever of 104.3. I had given Motrin at 6:30 and gave her some Tylenol at 11:30. Really hoping that it brings it down but don't want know if I should bother her to find out (we have an ear thermometer).

Looking for advice/reassurance that anyone can give. This up and down business is driving me mad. I thought she was getting BETTER!

  • At that temp a cool bath and fluids if it doesn't come down fast go to the ER, that is really high

I am a FTM, but I do know from experience with my niece that children can tolerate higher temps than adults can. No clue how old your DD is but hope this link helps..

  • DD is 2. I did some research before asking this and everything said that 104 is high but not a reason to panic -- not in a 2 year old...especially if the meds drop her temp. Thankfully her temp went down to 103 with the Tylenol after an hour.

I am a stepmom, and when my stepdaughter was around 2, she had a very high fever...I think it was 103. The doctor said it was a good idea to bring her in because that high of a temp is very dangerous for little kids.  They fed her popsicles, stripped her down to her diaper, and gave her motrin until her temp came down.  Bring her in if her temp is not getting better!!!

  • Fevers suck and a super scary! I would be concerned if the Tylenol didn't bring it down. But if the Tylenol is working then keep doing what you're doing, I would definitely go in and check if the fever is down. If it's back up to 104 give more Tylenol.
If it is still high in the morning call your doctors office or nurses line and see what they recommend.
Also be careful with a cool bath, too cold can shock the body.

  • What I find interesting is that my DD used to get fevers regularly from 1.5-6 years old of 104-105. The docs never seemed worried until she passed 7 or 8 days. It would come down with Tylenol/Advil, but just for a short time.
She never had the fever beyond 10 days, which is the point at which they would have done bloodwork etc. or if it went over 105.

I say, if LO isn't herself, and you're concerned...call or go in.
  • High temps are scary. DD gets high ones too. Her highest was 104.7 at 18 months old. When her temp gets that high we do warm baths, popsicles, warm/cool wash cloths on her neck or ankles.

As long as they are eating/drinking and alert they will be fine. Its concerning when they stop eating/drinking and is hard to wake.

I hope she feels better soon!

  • I'd take her to the doc. DS ran high fevers with ear infections which required antibiotics. Also if there is any chance she has the flu, there is a short time period for her to get tamiflu.
  • DS had croup a few months ago, and his fever spiked to 104.8 during that time.  I freaked out, called the doctor, and they reassured me that as long as he was responsive and wasn't just completely limp and out of it that it was OK to just give a luke warm bath with motrin and plenty of fluids to see if that worked.

The fever came right down after the bath, but I know how scary that can be!

  • My dd had a 103-104 fever for about 4 days when she was 2. It was around the clock taking advil and tylenol and finally once it broke she broke out in a terrible rash. She had roseolla.

  • When my sons fever goes high I give a dose of Tylenol and Motrin at the same time, this usually breaks it pretty quick. This is what the er and my doc said to try

  • My DD spikes fevers up to 105. Just jeep her comfortable. Give her a lukewarm bath and make sure it doesn't go higher. If it would ever get to 106 - take her. Our pedi said he's not worried about the temp as that is there to fight the infection, he's worried about the symptoms accompanying the fever have you called her pedi to see what they recommend?

  • DD2 spiked a temp over 103 with an ear infection when she was about 10 months old. It was the 4th of July so ped's office was closed, so we called the on-call doc who said as long as tylenol or motrin was bringing it down and it didn't go over 105 we could wait it out and bring her in the next day. If it hit 105+, we were to go straight to the ER.

Since your LO is one of several kids at daycare who have been sick she likely caught a virus and it just needs to run it's course, but I'd still take her in to the pedi in the morning just to be sure. Hope she feels better soon!

This. As she said, 104 is high but not a reason to panic. Toddlers fevers run higher than an adult's. Does your pedi have a nurse line or is on call on the weekends? Try giving him a call. He'll probably just recommend alternating Tylenol and Advil every 4-6 hours as directed. If you're really concerned or if the fever isn't lowering with medicine, try urgent care. I don't think the ER is nescessary though. Hope your dd feels better soon!! Give her plenty of fluids!

  • My DS had a fever of 104.5 for a few days--our pediatrician said not to take him to the ER unless his temp went over 105. (We did end up taking him when his temp hit 105.1). You can alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours, and definitely push fluids.  Watered down Gatorade is a nice treat.

  • Thanks all. The Tylenol helped last night - I ended up checking on her. By the time she woke up she barely had a fever but then it spiked to 104 again around noon. By 4 she was back down to 100.0. I just noticed it was going up again and gave her dome tylenol. Going on 36 hrs of this now...I'm tired and feel so bad for her. Plus, it's of course the worst week for me to be out at work as I have a huge deadline on the 21st. *sigh*

  • Cool bath, and alternate between tylenol and , motrin.

Going to the er the only other thing they may do is bloodwork honestly.

  • Fever all suppositories they usually work every time. Along with cool compress and increase fluids.
  • My DS has had temps up to 104 a couple of times...if rotating Tylenol and Motrin doesn't bring the fever down, and your baby isn't his/herself...go to the doc. Urgent care told me twice my son was just having an allergic reaction...by the third day I knew that something was off and urgent care was wrong. We went to the ER and DS was diagnosed with erythema multiforme. We were in the hospital for 3 days/2 nights. The ER doctor told us that trusting your mothers intuition is the best thing you can do, and it's usually right.
Just my experience. I never wanted to be the mom that overreacts, but sometimes you just gotta trust your gut :o/ HTH
  • When my ds fever gets that high I do tylenol or motrin, cool wash clothes, pop sickle and no bed covers. While I'm waiting on him to cool down I get things ready to head to ER. Cool bath and then ER as a last option.
