Had my twins

Hey ladies, I know I haven't posted in a while, but I wanted to update you all. I called my doctor the evening I was 32 weeks 2 days because I was having contractions and they were about 6-8 an hour. She asked if I wanted to come in, and since they weren't subsiding I said I did. I figured they would likely just babe Braxton hicks, I'd need some rest, and they would send me home later. Boy was I wrong. When I got the the hospital and they connected me to the machines and checked me, I was actually having contractions every 2 minutes, I was 4 cm dilated and 90% effaced. They put me on magnesium right away, and at first it wasn't doing anything. They doubled the dosage and my contractions started to slow. I remained on magnesium for a few days and on strict bed rest. I had to have family come into town to help me, and help take care of my 3 year old son. After a few days and two steroid shots, the doctors took me off the mag and began giving me a blood pressure medicine to keep the contractions away. It wasn't really doing the trick, and it was making my blood pressure drop severely low. The doctor decided to take me off it, and I went into labor at 33 weeks 0 days. The girls came out at 3 lb 12 oz and 4 lb 2 oz. one was put on oxygen for about an hour, the other was on room air right away. They are both in the Nicu now, and doing well. The doctors and nurses said to expect to bring them home when I would have been full term, so hopefully it will be just a few weeks. I'm hoping to find support from some of the other multiple mommies that have had their LOs I'm the Nicu, too. It's a lot to take in, and these past couple weeks have been a real whirlwind.

Re: Had my twins

  • Sorry it is all jumbled together, I posted from my iPad.
  • Congratulations! I had my boys at 33 and 4, they were 4 lb 3 oz and 3 lbs 5 oz- did 15 and 22 days in NICU. I think they just tell people to plan on bringing them home around due date to avoid disappointment. It is usually sooner.

My advice about NICU is to remember that they are YOUR babies. At first I had a hard time with having to ask to hold them, etc. but it gets easier as nurses get to know you and you get comfortable. Sleep while you can and try not to feel guilty that you can't be there all of the time. Taking care of yourself is so important.

Hopefully they'll be home before you know it!

  • Thanks ladies. It's definitely not the way I saw things going, but it never is, right? :) we are remaining positive, just sucks that they aren't home with us. We're trying to go over there everyday, which is hard with a 3 year old that isn't allowed in the Nicu, but we've had family and friends helping us make it work.
  • Congratulations! My boys were born two weeks ago at 33 weeks 2 days. One spent 9 days in the nicu. His brother is still there. Spend this time recovering from labor and visiting your babies. Also ask the nurses any questions you might have. They helped DH and I feel more confident about diapering, burping, bathing, and pumping.

  • Congrats!! I had my girls 2 weeks ago at exactly 32 weeks. They are expecting them to be in the NICU for another 2 weeks. As much as it sucks not having them home it is giving me time to heal and to get their nursery together. I agree with pp post they are your babies...I too had a hard time asking to hold them and was kind of nervous to ask too many questions because I didn't want to seem annoying but after about a week I felt much more comfortable. Also, don't feel bad saying no to visitors and no to people touching them. We only let close friends and family to see them but we don't let anyone touch them yet I'm just afraid of too many germs since they are so little. Good luck and hopefully your babies will be home soon!
  • Congrats! Wishing them a short NICU stay.

  • Congratulations. Thoughts for an easy and short NICU stay.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • Thanks girls. I'm so glad to hear we're not the only family. I know what y'all mean, my husband isn't scared to get them out of the incubators and had been great at doing all he can. I think maybe once my c section starts to feel better ill be more able to get up and move around with them more. Did y'all do any classes or anything about brining home little babies? We have a computer program were going to do at our nicu before, but I wasn't sure if we should do anything else too.
  • Congratulations! I hope you have your healthy babies home soon!
