Weaning

So I am ready to wean Emma from nursing. Ideally I would like to just nurse her when she wakes up and when she goes to bed at the most. I am trying to cut out any extra nursing sessions other then morning, naps and bedtime at this time. Sometimes during they day if she wants to nurse just because I try to distract her with cheerios, sippy cup (with thawed breast milk) or toys but some times she gets seriously angry if I dont let her nurse. Any other suggestions to help convince her she doesnt need the extra nursing sessions? Another note I am pretty sure my supply has dropped quite a bit I dont have any fullness and she bangs on my chest while nursing trying to get a let down. I havent pumped in months so I have no clue how many ounces I get.

Re: Weaning

  • maybe a bottle instead of a sippy, that way it will feel more like nursing to her. You will then have to go from bottle to sippy which is probably the extra step your trying to avoid, but it might be easier. I weaned a few months ago and baby had no problem taking bottles instead.

  • Yea I was trying hard not going back to bottles she hasn't had one in so long. She does take a sippy cup with her meals.

  • I am going through almost the same thing with my LO.  I am still only pumping once at work though and I am nursing him once during the day when I am with him.  After he turns one next week, I will only stick to morning, night, and the forever MOTN (I've tried weaning him off this several times and has never worked).  I have been giving him bottles and cups of milk, but he does not really take it from me until he whines and fusses for like an hour!  I try to distract him with food too, but he keeps tugging on me.  I understand how hard it is.

  • I would agree with letting it happen naturally.  If you really are drying up, eventually he will find those calories elsewhere.  My son has taken a lot of interest in food lately.  He was not so interested before and now he eats entire pancakes and toast, etc.  and has naturally started to drink less.

  • Thanks ladies, she fights so hard I think I will have to just let her wean naturally as much as I am ready she just isn't. Also, you are right if I am drying up she will hopefully start to loose interest. She is definitely getting all the calories she needs from her meals, because boy oh boy that girl can shovel some food down.
