Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Too soon to fly?

My LO is almost 6 weeks old and my husband's grandfather is in ailing health. It's very likely that he will pass on soon. We live in AZ and would have to travel to NY for the services. My question, how soon is too soon to fly with LO? Ideally it wanted to wait until he was three months and at least had his first round of vaccinations.

  • It's up to you and your husband and what you feel comfortable with.  Technically, babies can fly seven days after being born.  I'm taking my son to visit my family in AL next month and he will be almost 8 weeks old and will have had his first round of shots by then.

  • We are traveling by plane to Chicago next month for a wedding. LO will be 8 weeks.
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • We just got back from our first flight. He's 8 weeks old and went to sleep as soon as the engine started. No one tried to touch him.

I breastfeed so I got my flu shot prior to going to give him some passive immunity. His shots are next week.

The whole experience was much better than I expected. Security was fine, people were tripping over each other to help with the caraway and stroller. They didn't even ask about the milk we carried on.

We did buy a seat for him so he could be in his carseat, but I don't think its nessecary
  • We just moved across the country - two 3 1/2 hour flights. DS2 was only 4 1/2 weeks. I kept him in my moby wrap and no one came near him. He slept 100% of the time.

@sallywacket, did you have to take him out of your wrap for take off and landing?

  • Adorable!
  • We're planning to fly internationally, 2 3-hour flights when LO is 8 weeks old. Lap child, so you can hold or keep them wrapped the entire time incl takeoff and landing.
