Umbilical hernia

Anyone's LO have/had one? If so how long did it take to go away? Or did it require surgery?
My LO has one, causing no issues but was just curious about others experiences.

Re: Umbilical hernia

  • My girls were born just shy of term and both had hernias. One is nearly resolved at 12w and the other is much improved. Pedi said they usually go away by 2yrs.

  • Thanks ladies. My DDs is cute. I call it her doorbell. I press it and go ding dong. Lol. I am a wacko.
  • Our DD's went away on it's own by about 3 months actual. I thought it was an outtie at first, too! Mi had never heard of an umbilical hernia.

  • My son had one. It was quite large, but the drs also advised that it would go away. However, he also developed double inguinal hernias that did require surgery. We opted to have the umbilical hernia repaired at the same time. The surgeon later told us that it probably wouldn't have fixed itself so we had made the right decision.
I love the door bell thought. So cute!!

  • One of my twins had this. It resolved itself. I think it was around 3ish-4ish months old. It feels so long ago that I don't remember.

  • I'll be happy when it's gone. It doesn't hurt her and docs say it will go away but I feel bad for her because to me it looks like it hurts.
  • Glad you asked this!  It looks painful, but doesn't seem to bother her.  The pediatrician said as long as I can push it back in it's fine, and it will eventually go away.

    Haha, you're funny.

True story - DH and I didn't know DD had an umbilical hernia for a few weeks. I was not in good shape (still on Mag) for a few days after her birth, so our initial medical convos are hazy. We thought she had an outie belly button until a nurse told us the hernias usually resolve on their own. What? Ah, good times...

    Exactly this lol
  • DD2 had one -- and it was huuuuuge. However, it resolved on its own -- maybe around 5-6 months old? The docs said they would wait until she was a year old, and then decide what to do then, if anything was needed.

  • I decided to google it and look at images of what you ladies were talking about. BAD IDEA! Don't do it! I will have nightmares for the entire week! Eeeek! Good luck but it sounds like most of them go away on their own!
  • DS had one. It didn't appear until he was about 3 months old but resolved before he was 6 months old.  They told us it can take up until two years and that they would not recommend surgery unless it was painful for him (which it was not) or if we could not push it back in (which we could)

I would also note that it made weird sounds and squished and they told us this was totally normal.... but gross!

  • My DS had one and it was gone by 5 months old.  I swear one day it just disappeared.  The doctor said it's almost completely closed (he felt it) and that he shouldn't have any problems.

  • Mine had/has one. (At least I'm fairly certain she still does. Her bellybutton still pokes out some, but it's very small.) Pediatrician says that it usually resolves itself by 2-3 years. If it's still there by 3 years they correct it surgically from what I understand.
