Secondary IF

How many?

I have DOR, my recent level of FSH is 15.   I'm going through my first IVF right now.  I was disappointed with my response.   5 follicles, 4 eggs, 3 fertilized.  I was expecting to transfer two on Day 3 (which is today) but my doctor says they are all 4-cell and look good and to push for day 5.  He recommends transferring one at day 5.

Originally during this cycle I was planning to do PGD, however, with as few follicles as I developed, I cancelled PGD.  I didn't think the extra expense was worth it on so few embryos.

I'm considering transferring two at day five, and here's why:  I've been trying to get pregnant for 3 years.  Last year we started IUI treatments.  On three IUI's I got pregnant on two, but had miscarriages - both chromosonally abnormal babies.  I have a four year old daughter that was spontaneously conceived.  I don't especially want twins, but I would rather have two than zero.  At this point if I only transfer one, I don't know if the others will be good enough to freeze as well, so that influences things.  What I'm trying to avoid is IVF #2.  Am I crazy for thinking about transferring two?

Re: How many?

  • I just had this talk with my RE recently. I guess at my clinic the pretty much always transfer 2, no matter what day they are doing it. I'm starting to feel like my clinic has a crappy success rate over all (idk why this makes me want to LOL? Maybe because it just effing figures.) My RE basically told me do not even bother considering wasting money on a freeze because they have the most craptastic success rates with FETs. I was like this -  :-S the entire time.

Sorry to ramble on. I know at my office, with my Dr. I would do 2, because I am not overly confident in them. If you want to transfer 2, I do not think that is crazy because even with IVF there are no guarantees so you want to try to give yourself the best possible chance for success.

    Good luck.

  • FWIW I say go for it. Not crazy at all. Shounds like you have a great mindset. If you and DH agree, do it up!

  • I don't think you are crazy either.  I think if your doc is good with it and you both are good with it.  I say go for it too.  Do what you feel is the right thing to do.

  • I personally wanted to transfer 2 and was ok with the idea of twins, but DH was adamant that we only transfer 1. It depends on how many babies you are comfortable with, and know that if you transfer 2 and one of them natually splits, you could be looking at triplets!

We ended up freezing 2 and if this one takes then we plan on donating them for research. I am not comfortable having my genetic children out there without me knowing them. It was a pretty easy decision for us, but I know it can be very difficult when you're torn. Good luck!
