Different cries

I've always heard that a mom can tell by the cry what the baby needs. My LO is one month old and I have no idea what she wants when she cries. I just go through each thing (hungry, tired, etc) until I figure it out. Am I the only one that doesn't know what her LOs cries mean?

There's a very cool YouTube video about the language of a newborn (it was a show on Oprah). I'll see if I can find the link. My LO makes these sounds and they're easy to hear once you get the hang of it. Auli says "Leh" when she's hungry. And different sounds when she's uncomfortable, gassy, tired, etc.

  • I can def tell Renny's gassy cry. It is more about knowing when he cries, not how, for me. If he works up to it, he is hungry or tired. If he just starts wailing with no warning, I know within a min or 2 he will burp, fart, poop, or spit up.

  • I can't tell either. I am going to watch the video to see if I can be a better mommy. I feel like I am a failure for not knowing his cries.

  • just watched the video... my LO def makes those sounds!
  • I don't let LO get to a full blown cry to tell me she needs to eat. She has other signs I notice before she gets to that point. The only time she gets upset and cries is if she needs to be changed or is about to poop. I swear she'd rather be clean than eat the way she cries for a new diaper.

  • I find it weird my guy doesn't cry if his diaper is full. Or maybe I just catch it before he notices

  • I still am trying to figure mine out as well!

  • I will watch the video and see if it helps. My LO, I think, has just started crying because of dirty diapers. She doesn't seem to have much gas. It seems like most of the time she cries is because she's hungry or tired.

I can't tell either. I am going to watch the video to see if I can be a better mommy. I feel like I am a failure for not knowing his cries.

I'm sorry, but glad I'm not the only one!

I feel like this too! Honestly, many things make me feel like a mom bomb.

  • I cant always tell. I know when he's working on a poop and sometimes when he's overtired. I know he's hungry when he starts woodpeckering every bit of skin looking for a nipple - it's totally adorable. He makes little frustration sounds when he does it. But I don't let him go too long or he wails.
  • I swear when he's hungry he actually sounds like that's what he's crying out. Over and over. Other than that he's only got different degrees if Mad.
  • I can tell the cries *usually* by the context.  If it's been about 2 hours, she's hungry.  About an hour after she ate, she's tired.  And waking up crying is usually a burp or fart coming. And on the changing table, she's a diva who hates getting her diaper changed.

I hate that I can't prevent the cries by reading the other signs.  She wakes up and eats.  I swear she has even been sleeping on me and there are no other signs (rooting, etc), it's just a full blown wail.  Same with being tired.  She goes from cooing and smiling (ok, what I call smiling, it's really just a happy face) to screaming.  There's a lot of crying going on at our house.

I'm in the Mom Bomb club too.
