Corporate ladies - is it possible to get a P/T job off the bat?

I am in middle/upper management at a mid-size biotech company. I *hate* working here - it's an awful company with no vision and questionable ethics. So, I'm looking for a new opportunity. I don't really want to dig into a new job full time, as I'm expecting #2 in May and want to spend more time with DD. Knowing that I wouldn't be able to get the same level of job, I'd still like to find a P/T position at a different company. Have any of you gotten a P/T position going into a new organization? They are almost never advertised, so my assumption is you have to pay your dues F/T for a few years and then ask for the P/T privilege. Any thoughts? FWIW, I'm a business strategy person, but also have a technical background.

  • I am in software engineering, and I never see PT positions listed. My plan is to put my time in at my company and then ask to go PT in the future. It really sucks, I gave up an awesome 4day a week schedule when I left my last job, I really really miss it.

  • I have seen plenty of PT positions listed, but they are usually lower level positions. We have brought in plenty of people who worked PT right off the bat, but I can't recall any of them being management.

  • I think these positions go by referral/word of mouth.  Can you work with a recruiter?  Put out feelers through your network?

  • I don't see PT professional level jobs advertised too often. I second the idea of working with a recruiting firm/headhunter.  Or, perhaps approaching companies as an independent contractor.

  • OK, thanks, I was afraid this was the case (I really haven't been looking yet). Networking is tricky since I would like to keep this job until I find a new one, but I'm sure I can pull something off.

  • I would try the consulting/freelance route, if I was looking to do part time work.
