Couple of questions re your 1yo and sippies/milk

Just have a couple questions for those of you recently moved over to milk (no formula/BM anymore) and sippies

1. How much milk is LO drinking in a day? How about other liquid?
2. What sippy cup do you recommend? Do they use ones with or w/o handles?

We recently phased out formula and at the same time have gone to sippy cups.  I don't feel though that DS really 'likes' any of his sippys so I'm wondering which one is working best for all of you? Also, now that he's on milk he just isn't as interested in drinking as he used to be when it was bottles/formula so I want to be sure he's getting enough. He certainly eats a lot, I'm not concerned about nutrition or weight. I'm a huge water drinker so I'm always concerned that my kids aren't getting enough fluids! I don't know if I've blocked all this out from what we did with DS1 or if I'm just over thinking it this time around but it just seems harder!

thanks!

Re: Couple of questions re your 1yo and sippies/milk

  • We offer DD milk with each meal and if there is milk left over I offer it to her with a snack.  I would say she drinks about 15oz a day.  I always have a sippy of water out so she can have that any time she wants.  No other liquids besides milk and water.  We give her milk out of a straw sippy and water out of a regular sippy, both have handles.  I want her to know how to use both so this is how I do that, no reason other than that.

This is the straw one we have: https://www.amazon.com/Zo-li-Bot-Straw-Sippy-Cup/dp/B0031E1GEG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381512094&sr=8-1&keywords=zoli+bot

And we have tried many regular sippys but this is the one both her and I like best (it does not leak which is why I like it): https://www.amazon.com/Nuby-Count-Handle-Spill-Colors/dp/B00792RG1S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381512145&sr=8-1&keywords=nuby+sippy+cup

  • My pediatrician told me that DD should have anywhere from 15-25 oz of milk per day, once we're fully transitioned from the formula.

  • DD does not drink milk, we've tried several different kinds and she won't drink them. She drinks water and nurses occasionally. We've been using the Nuby straw cups and DD really likes them.

  • Our Pedi says no more than 24 oz of milk a day.  DS gets milk at meals and water throughout the day and with snack. He is still getting the hang of the straw. We use the munchkin brand and started with the kind without the straw and with handles and once he mastered that, we moved to the kind without the handles.
  • My one year old gets about 16-18ounces if milk a day, with juice or water available all day. The transition from formula to whole milk was quite easy for us, thank goodness. The pediatrician suggested we start making each bottle half formula half while milk and eventually tapering down to all whole milk. It helped if the milk was lukewarm at first, now he'll accept cold milk. We went through a draw full of sippie cup before we had success. What worked best for us was finding one with a nipple close to a bottle. After a couple of weeks we started offering different ones until we discovered his preference.
  • Thanks everyone!
right now we have DS on WCM and that's going fine, he drinks it great but only from a bottle.
I've tried so many different cups but he pushes them all away, it's driving me crazy! At daycare they give him water in a sippy for snacks (milk in his bottle for b/l and then I do the same for dinner) so hopefully he'll get used to the sippy soon.
