Babywearing

I was just wondering how many of you still wear your LOs around, how much they weigh, and what carrier you use.

I was so excited to wear DS when he was born but he ended up on an apnea monitor for the first few months, so it wasn't quite the ideal situation. We used a carrier with him a handful of times between 5 and 10 months but haven't since, mainly because he just got too big too quickly and the carrier we had was only good for up to 25 lbs. He will be 18 months in 1 week and he's around 32 or 33 lbs. I've recently seen a handful of pictures on instagram and across the internet of moms wearing their toddlers but never imagined that past infancy it was ok to still wear your kid, for whatever reason. I love the idea of carriers but don't know much about it past infancy. Any input is appreciated!

Re: Babywearing

  • I have a soft structured carrier that is good to 35 lbs and a ring sling that is good for up to 30 lbs. the bigger she gets the more I use the soft structured carrier. The ring sling is still good for short distances but it does start to hurt my shoulder if I use it for more than a half hour. DD just started walking more so she isn't so keen on the carrier right now. Walking is just too much fun but I am sure we will use it again. I use the carrier for doing things around the house like sweeping, laundry, etc. too
  • I use my Ergo for both my 16month old and my almost 3yo! I always back carry now. DD is only 21lbs and DS is about 30lbs. I love it b/c I can get away with only bringing my single stroller & the Ergo instead of my big double.

Here he is this summer at the zoo.

  • Lurker here. My daughter is 16 months and 21lbs and 31inches, I wear her several times a week. I also occasionally wear my 3.5 year old. I own a standard kinderpack which is perfect for my DD and a bit small for my DS. It's rated up to 45lbs. Another option in Soft Structured Carriers for you might be a Tula either Standard or toddler depending on size of your kiddo. If there is a Babywearing group near you, try attending a meeting. There will be lots of different types of carriers to try and you can find what works best for you.
  • I still carry both Lucas and my almost three year old who is almost 32 in my scootababy it's good for shopping and shorter trips not good for hiking but super easy to put either kid in with no adjusting.

There are TONS of options for wearing older kids beco has some great ones. If you want to know more try finding a local baby wearing group to try out different things.

  • I just used my ergo the other day on a trail hike. I wore her in front bc I thought she was going to snooze but next time I am going to try carrying her on my back. Not sure how much she weighs now as we have yet to reschedule her last pedi appt (smacking self on back of hand, "bad mommy!)

  • I would still be wearing him, if I wasn't 8 months along with #2.... I'm sure I could, I just don't know how comdortable it'd be... But then again, I guess I won't know till I try it.
