Positive FFn - your experience

So I am 28.5 weeks and since 25 weeks, my cervix has been shortening. As if Monday I was at 1.77 with 1.9 funneling. My FFn was positive yesterday so I just has a steroid shot and will have another one tomorrow.

Did any of you have a +FFn and last longer than 2 weeks? Otherwise I am absolutely asymptotic and feel really good.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!

Re: Positive FFn - your experience

  • I had a positive ffn at 31 weeks and my OB directed me to this article (clicky). She reassured me that a negative test means that there is minimal chance that you will begin labor in the next two weeks and a positive test means that you could potentially start labor in the next two weeks but it's not nearly as accurate as the negative. FWIW I didn't begin labor until 36w6d. Are you on bedrest? Are you being monitored very closely? Best of luck to you! I hope your little ones keep cooking for many more weeks yet!

  • I got a positive ffn at 30 weeks. And I delivered the boys at 33 weeks. I was on modified bed rest for those three weeks.

  • I had a positive FFN at 34w and has my son at 35w. That being said, he was a singleton and I was not put on bed rest or anything. Had I, I probably could have made it longer! Positive is not a guarantee that you will go into labor.

I had a positive FFn around 25.5 weeks (put on modified BR -- basically 8 hrs a day on my side, but allowed to go out to dinner, etc), ruptured around 28.5 weeks, and then delivered at 29w3d. Like PPs said -- a negative FFn is VERY reliable, a positive...not so much.

  • My singleton I had a positive FFN test at 32 weeks and then a negative at 34 weeks. He was born a few hours shy of 37 weeks. These boys I had a positive FFN test 4 weeks ago I am on strict bed rest at home due to cervical issues and so far no babies. My OB told me that they dont think FFN are too reliable with multiples. Also they basically just mean it could happen not that it will.

  • I had a positive at 25 weeks and funneling/shortening cervix with preterm contractions.
I was admitted to hospital for bedrest since I lived 3 hours away (in a very rural area at that time) and my MFM was concerned I would go into labor at home. All of that being said, I was on bedrest with Procardia and had some light episodes of PTL until 31 weeks when it picked up again. Stopped labor with 36 hours on mag drip. I then made it to 34w5d when they said they would no longer intervene with meds to stop it.
    Good luck!

  • I had a positive ffn with DS1 at 28 weeks I kept him baking till 35weeks so mine was false. I was told that a positive does not mean much only a negative is a real answer.

  • Thanks everyone. I appreciate it! I am being monitored closely and have been having weekly trans and abd us and appointments with MFM since 25 weeks when cervix first went under 3.

The doc explained that a negative test is more predictive and helpful but in the face of a positive we have to be aggressive - thus MBR and steroids shot.
