Diapers for FTM

What's everyone, especially FTMs, doing in the diaper arena? I only received a few boxes and only one was newborn size, so... should I buy smaller boxes of multiple kinds and see what we like? Or just buy several boxes of a well reviewed kind and change if they don't work for us?

I feel like I have fear of missing out on a great diaper by not trying multiple brands.

I want to try CD down the road, but I do want a good disposable right at first.

Re: Diapers for FTM

  • We're CDing as soon as we leave the hospital...

I wad told they're only on the NB size for a few weeks, so maybe get one more package of NB and then get a box or to of size 1 and size 2...

  • I've started stocking up on Target's Up&Up brand diapers. They're rated in the top 10 according to babygearlab.com. We'll see what others we get at the shower this weekend...

  • I'm a STM, but we have a small thing of Newborn (hospital will give us a bunch as well), a box of Sz 1 and box of Sz 2.  Our favorite brand to use is the Pampers Swaddlers.  We haven't tried them, but I have heard good things about the Target brand and Honest Company (which we may try down the road).  As for wipes, we prefer the Huggies brand (the Natural ones).  They feel more cloth like to use.  I have one large box of those.

  • I guess I should also ask, how long are they in newborn diapers? If there's a good resource for estimating this, please link.

I am so dumb on this subject.

This is a great blog with a breakdown of approximately how many diapers you need:
    https://www.southernsavers.com/2012/08/stocking-up-on-diapers-how-much-to-buy-at-what-price/

Also I only used newborn diapers in the hospital. DD was over 8lbs so wen we or home we went straight to ones. I also loved the pampers swaddlers. DD leaked through everything else. They also have the wetness indicator that was really handy.

Not dumb. I've never really understood diaper stockpiling.

  • I feel like there are more choices past the newborn stage.  My DDs born at 7 lbs and 7.5 lbs wore N size for 6ish weeks?  That was a lot of dipes.  =(  I got a box of swaddlers at Target because they are on clearance at the targets around here and their pathetic clearance with a coupon made them ok priced.  They are just to fill in because I only purchased a dozen newborn cloth dipes.
I'd just not open extra boxes and attach the receipt to the box so it doesn't get lost.

Not at all!  Just do whatever you think is going to be easier/best for you!!  I had to send my husband out to get more newborn diapers when DS1 was born (he was born at 37w weighing 7lb 11oz, but still needed newborn size for about a week - and they go through a ton!).  It was a bit of a hassle, but not completely unthinkable.  This time around with DS2, I'd like to just have things on hand to minimize the trips to the store.  As time went on with DS1, I started ordering diapers off Amazon so they came directly to my front door - much easier!  This time I've just picked some up at a Sam's type store and will probably order online after those.

This is my situation exactly. I have a box of NB and a box of 3's. Haha. All set!

@barista411 Thanks for that link! That's just what I needed.

Not dumb at all! I have one pack I got on sale and that's it. I had all kinds of hopes of stocking up (hence the blog post above) but I have up pretty quickly and decided just to buy them and SAMs as we need them.

This is us as well.  We have no diapers here at the house.

We'll take the stash at the hospital and then I'll send DH to Target for a stash.

  • I bought 2 big boxes of size 1. My first 2 kids were under 7 pounds at birth but over 9 lbs by 1 month. I remember newborn, 1, 2 going really fast then they were in size 3 for a very long time. If baby is small, someone will pick up newborn for me. I was convinced this will be my big baby but if he comes early maybe not.
  • I have a big box of Pampers NB, 2 little packages of Huggies NB, and then a BUNCH of size 1 and size 2. They were all gifted to me and some of the 1's were used at the baby shower as decorations. I'm just going to only open 1 pack a time to make sure DD does OK with them. If they don't work, then we will take the unopened packages back for an exchange.

  • We received a bunch at our shower, probably 5 or 6 of the moderate size packages of newborn, a bunch of ones and then some random bigger ones.  I'm definitely not going out to buy anymore, but will probably donate what's left of the newborns that we don't use.
  • We're doing CD's as soon as the meconium is gone and we're home from the hospital, but I also have a giant box of Costco's Kirkland brand ones that DH picked up to use if the CD's don't go well. I've heard good things about them and they're cheap.

  • I wouldn't stock up on Newborn size. More like 1's and 2's if you do. I used disposables with DD until she was about 6 months old and then switched to CDing. We will be CDing LO as soon as we leave the hospital.

  • If you get extra, just return them for a different size.
  • I'm going to have a box or two of newborn and maybe size 1 for the first week.  After that we're doing a diaper service.  They say that newborns need around 80-90 diapers a week!

Wow that is so insightful! NOT!
  • FTM but also a nanny, so LOTS of diaper experience over the years. I've been creating a modest stash since the first trimester. From my experience, Pampers Swaddlers are THE best hands down for the first couple of months when you get a lot of blow outs. I have about 400 size 1, and 200 size 2 in the swaddlers. Once she starts sleeping through the night I'll switch to a generic brand (Up and Up from Target are amazing!) during the day and use a name brand for overnight use.

As far as wipes, Huggies One and Done are my favorite. Like a pp said they are almost cloth like. I've tried the pampers wipes, and got some at my shower..but I seriously hate them, they are so thin! I'll probably end up using them as face/hand wipes.

  • We don't do Pampers Swaddlers.  They gave my last 3 kids chemical burns on the bottom (apparently not all that uncommon if you google it.)  The Huggies never gave my kids a problem though.

This baby we're using cloth, but I went ahead and got a case of 7th generation in newborns ordered today so I can bring some to the hospital because they use Pampers there and I'm bringing 7th generation wipes b/c the hospital ones are sorry and full of parabens and yuck and I'd prefer not to wipe that on my baby's private parts.

(I think the case of newborn diapers worked out to just over $7 a bag with the Amazon mom 20% discount and there was a clip-able $3 off coupon.)

My babies have all been between 7 and 8 lbs I know I went through at least 6 bags of newborns with each of them.

  • I have big babies, so I'm not buying newborn diapers at all. I will take some home with me from the hospital.

I recently bought a huge box of swaddlers size one.

  • We are CDing as soon as we get home as well. Mostly prefolds at first, we can then use the prefolds as inserts for the remaining time we CD. Seemed like the most customizable way to start that wasn't wasteful. Although today I was looking at newborn rentals and I would have done that had I found a reasonable place earlier... Seemed nuts to make a depost of hundreds of dollars if I didn't know I would like the diapers. But you can always return unopened packs if disposables and exchange got larger sizes if need be.
  • 3rd timer here, I bought a box of Luv's 1's this past weekend so consider myself ready to have a baby.  My DDs (7#12oz, 7#7oz) were in NB for a few weeks to a month each (I don't like giant diapers on kids) and we used Huggies (mostly, had a few various brands as gifts) w/ DD1 then switched to Walmart brand as she got bigger, started off and liked Luv's so other than gifts used these until the switch to walmart brand was cheaper -- not I am not near a Target so have no opinion on the beloved Up&Up.

Honestly, I cannot stay at home every day all day for maternity leave and need excuses to go somewhere and to the store seems reasonable.

  • I like Target brand diapers but Kroger brand (Comforts) are my absolute favorite. Kroger brand formula also comes in Organic and I used that for DD once I quit BFing. They also often have digital coupons to load on your store card.

Lots of kids are sensitive to a certain type if diaper & will get rashes so I wouldn't stock up until you know your LO is good to go with a specific diaper. We never had this problem but many ppl do!
  • I asked some of my friends and they have all recommended me to get huggies since im having a girl.  They uses pampers for their boys.  I bought the huggies with the umbilcal cord cut out, just enough for about 10 days worth, then will go from there.  I got a diaper cake for my shower that also has some different sizes in it.
  • We are cd from the start, my dad said though that he wants to get us some new born diapers just in case, so far I have 20 prefolds and 30 oh so cute pocket diapers

This is what we have done too! I got a few boxes of pampers then heard through some friends that these are just as good! And thanks to @nciesla and her suggestion for Target's cartwheel app we have gotten some pretty great deals:))
  • Don't waste too much money on NB size.. If size 1 is a little big (mostly when they still have their cord stump), just fold the front down before fastening. Having 3 kids already, we've gone through almost every brand of diaper. DS1 leaked through Huggies. Pampers are our absolute favorite (and its probably weird, but I love the smell of (clean) Pampers). Luvs were the worst. We eventually settled on Target Up & Up brand because of the price. So that's what we'll use this time (unless there's a sale on Pampers somewhere, then we'll stockpile those!!) :)
  • This is my 2nd baby. We have 2 boxes of 1's.my first born was 10lbs 23 inches.
This one here is also very large.
I like to be prepared so I buy diapers when I see them on sale
I use the pampers swaddlers. loved them with my first.

....Uh..what difference does baby being a boy or girl make? Boys use Huggies too and girls use Pampers too
  • I bought a case of newborn pampers. Received a small case and a big case of size 1 pampers at my baby shower. And I received 2 small cases of size one Huggies at my baby shower too..working at my job made me not like Huggies too much but...since they were a gift, I will put them to use.
  • I love Pampers Swaddlers and the Pampers Cruisers when they get older.

We've got 2 small packages of the NB size (I only opened one and saved the receipt for the other just in case I need to return them) and one box of size 2 diapers that I bought months ago because I thought they said size 5 which is what DS1 wears.

We now have Amazon Mom so we'll have them delivered to our house every month after he is born. It's been very convenient.
