Can you use Bacitracin when pregnant?

Hey everyone :) I have a burn on my pinky finger that looks to be getting infected (gross..) and Bacitracin is all I have. It says its an antibiotic ointment and nowhere does It say you can't use it when pregnant. So I did my research and found an article on webmd that says use it only when needed. Well needless to say, I'm still confused and no place is open for me to call and find out. Anybody used this before while pregnant? I apologize if the picture of my burn grosses people out...

  • I say wash it in mild soap and put a band aid on it. Then you can find out what's safe to use in the morning.

  • Call the docs office, or, even better a pharmacy. Pharmacists are pretty good at knowing these things :-)

  • @Mapleme the hydrogen peroxide in my cupboard only gets used for 1 thing - inducing vomiting in the dog when she gets into things she shouldn't!  Oooh, it really can be used for anything :)

  • Thank you everyone for your advice! :) my finger feels sooooo much better already haha
  • Bacitracin inhibits cell wall synthesis.  Since eukaryotic cells (human cells) don't have a cell wall, I can't see how it would be harmful. I wouldn't use it systemically because there may be off target effects, but topically it really shouldn't be a problem.  (yay grad school knowledge put to use!!) **disclaimer, I am not a Dr. or a pharmacist, but I am (almost) a PhD in pharmacology**
