Babies: 9 - 12 Months

whole milk alternative question

I will be talking to my pediatrician about this in 2 weeks, but would love real life mom advice as well. My son had a pretty bad intolerance to milk when he was born. I won't say true allergy, but a definite intolerance. BF did not work, we went through a variety of formula fails as well. Finally it seemed he had grown out of it a little and is doing ok on gerber formula. He will be a year old next week, and we tried an ounce of whole milk mixed with his bottle last weekend to see if he would even notice the taste, etc. He spit up immediately after the bottle. Not just a little spit up (and he hasn't spit up in a couple months) but at least an ounce or 2 of milk. I haven't tried since and am now nervous he still has an issue with the milk protein.
Google is not much help obviously, so what are some alternatives that have worked for everyone in case we have to go this route? Thanks in advance!

My son is the same way. We're doing goat milk, and if that fails then coconut milk. Goat milk is easiest for every person to digest and is most like BM. It's full of good fats and vitamins as well. We do goat milk everything for Cade since he too doesn't tolerate milk proteins very well. We get him goat milk yogurt, cheeses, ect. The next mest alternative is coconut milk since it's high in fats that they need. I use this a lot for Cade as well. GL!

  • This may be a dumb question but where do you buy goat's milk? I have read a lot about it, but just hearing goat's milk still makes me nervous for some reason ha

  • I get it at Central Market, but many of the more "crunchy" stores carry organic goats milk (Wegmans/Whole Foods). Our regular stores even carry some of it. It doesn't have the same proteins as cows milk. It's nothing to be afraid of. You try it and if he has a bad reaction, do coconut milk. My son is not tolerant of cows milk/dairy either, but does well of Gerber and does well with goat milk.

  • Idk if you have Dominicks where you live, but it is a common store around here and they have it.

  • Just out of curiosity, what is the price of goats milk in comparison to cows milk?

For us it's not much more. We spend about 6-8$ per gallon for our milk, it's about the same as that. We get our milk from a dairy though and 1.50 of the gallon price in a deposit on the glass bottles that we get back.

  • Thanks for the advice! Some people think he's ok now because he did better on gerber but it's 100% whey protein not casein and broken down differently so I think that is why.

Gerber still has casein in it. It's just a low casein formula. The whey proteins are also partially broken down, which is why pedi's recommend it as most like BM. My son is the same way. We tested him a few times with milk products like yogurt and cheeses and all those times he ended up with really gross poops. We call it "cottage cheese" poops, since it looks like that. Our nutritionist and pedi both told us to eliminate all cows dairy until 12 months. Then retest. We'll still use a milk alternative though even if he does fine on it. Some babies aparently can have MPI, but not be severe enough to need hypoallergenic formula. Weird eh?

You could try fortified almond milk - it has 5g of protein and 2g of fat. We buy the So Delicious almond plus brand (for my H).

And you would also need to feed your LO protein and fat alternatives - more olive oil, chickpeas, beans, lean meat, eggs, avocado, etc.
This is one of the reasons coconut milk is suggested more than almond milk. Almond milk also had a lot of sugar.

Coconut milk has no protein though. Our pedi recommended fortified almond milk over coconut milk because of the overall nutritional content if we wanted a dairy-free alternative.
Ah yeah. Ours doesn't reccommend almond milk cuz of the sugar and lack of fats. LOL. Such a wide opinion.

Holy moly! I was guessing $4-5 a gallon. We pay $2.50 for a regular gallon of milk...

Most of our milk is the deposit on the bottles though. I think the Goats Milk is much cheaper than our milk. I didn't really check. LOL

ETA We also get our milk from a local dairy. It's whole raw milk. Rosie gets from the same dairy, but it's pasteurized 2%. The goats milk we buy from Central Market, but it too is a local farm and it's cheaper since there isn't a 1-3$ deposit on the bottles.

  • @MrsMuq, if you decide to go w/ almond milk (which I think is a reasonable alternative if there are other significant sources of healthy fats in the diet), you might consider looking for "unsweetened" (which is different from "original") to cut down on the sugar. The "original", and of course vanilla, really are loaded with sugar. Like PP said, there are a bunch of options - all of which have their pros and cons.
  • Thanks everyone!

  • I started my daughter on sheep milk when she was 13 months. Supposedly it's the closet liquid to breast milk. She is a super healthy 3 year old now!
  • We are going the goat's milk route...(easier to digest, most similar to BM, less lactose ect). I have been giving my little one goat's yogurt already and she has taken it to very well so I think she will adjust when the time comes (she is 10 1/2 months old).

  • I don't plan on giving DD milk. I might try a coconut/almond milk combo later but I've still been able to BF and I want to do that for a long time.
