s/o pronouncing things

MH has been in MN the last few days, and one of the first things he texted me after he arrived was "We are going to have accents up here, big time.  Apparently we say 'sorry' wrong, among other things."  Looking forward to that!  LOL

How do you say SORRY?  We say "SAH-ree" but apparently it's "SOO-ree" up there; like they think they're Canadian or something.  :P  Wonder what else I'll be saying "wrong" in the great white north??

  • LOL @meow84!  I expect we will be considered to have "southern" accents up there, though we really are very mild compared to the REAL south.  Oklahoma is pretty mid-America/mid-accent.   ;)

  • Sah-ree. I can't even imagine anyone saying Sooo-ree. That's weird!

PS: I am a southerner that went to a small private college (in FL) with like 75% New Englanders (I guess they are attracted to the beach?) and a roommate/BFF from MI and my southern accent is forever altered. I would get made fun of for being southern at school, and get called a yankee at home. I think I've gotten some of it back, but since being around MH (originally from Chicago, grew up in Palm Beach) I still go back and forth.

My hubby says sooo-ree and I say sah-ree. It's funny bc its something that drives the other nuts! How does a couple resolve an argument when the other is annoyed by the apology?

For record Hubs and I were both born an raised in the same province in the prairies of Canada.

  • I have even told that I sound very genuine Minnesotan. Haha. I, however, say it sah-ree.

I do get made fun of for my long o. Example when I say pole apparently it sounds like pool.

  • Um, definitely SO-ree. Grew up 30 min south of Canada and when I went to Colorado for college (land of no accent), I got lots of heat for anything with a long O...like "booooat". And the "e" in place of "a". Living in MN now for 10 years, I think that North Dakota people have a CLEAR accent. "Oh yeah, you betcha" is a real thing they say in ND. And "oof-dah".

  • I'm Canadian, live on the border of MI.  My sisters BF is from MI, less than a 30 min drive away.  We say soo-ree, he says sah-ree.  And when he goes home from spending a weekend with us, his family teases him for speaking "canadian".

Hahah my husbands grandparents say "oof-dah" all the time. I love them though, so it's ok.
On grandparents it is cute. On my mom....it bugs me, not sure why. LOL!!

  • I've NEVER in my life heard that phrase, @wmel13!  Thanks for sharing!  One less thing I'll be clueless about.   :P

@wmel13 love there is a Wikipedia definition for this one. I would agree it translates to "overwhelmed" or "uff da I'm tired" or "uff da this is heavy" or "uff da she's in trouble"!
