Tandem feeding

This may be a stupid question but how do you ladies who tandem BF get both babies to the breast without the first one falling off while trying to pick up the second one? Does that make sense? Do you latch one then the next or get them both positioned and then latch them? Do you do this in a glider or is on the couch easier because you can lay babies next to you? This all seems so daunting to me!

Re: Tandem feeding

  • I bf on my bed. I have a MBF pillow and lay both of them on the bed, get pillow positioned, put one on the pillow, then the other, and then latch them. They still pop off a lot bc my let down is pretty forceful and one of mine is just fussy in general.

I was pretty intimidated the first few times I did it myself. But you get used to it. Also, my boys were in the NICU for 13 days and I only tandemed them a few times there.

  • I watched this video and it was like a light bulb went off. Of course these twins are a bit older but it really gave me an idea of how to go about doing it.

  • I use the brest friend pillow either on the couch or my bed. Have the kiddos next to me. Get pillow adjusted, then put each baby on a side then latch them. If one pops off just put them back on. I've been doing this since we came home from the hospital at 5 days
    old.
  • So there is no fear of them rolling of the brest friend pillow? This is my bigest fear! I have the singleton version but need to get the twins version.

  • The twins version if the pillow is huge. I tandemed in the hospital on a boppy and my barely 5lb babies were rolling and slipping.

My boys are around 12lbs now and the fit well on the MBF pillow. Their legs are starting to hang significantly off the back but it's not bad.

  • I clearly have no experience yet but there are great you tube videos out there.

  • When I was still trying to BF, I would sit on the couch. I would position my son and get him latched since he had an easier time of it, then position my daughter and get her on. It is definitely challenging! And I agree with PP that it helps if someone else is there to help you get them positioned. And I highly recommend the twin Brest Friend pillow!
  • nervous about this also. Where can you find the twin breast friend pillow?
