"I go poo" (potty training question)

Question for those out there who have started potty training their LOs or have successfully completed it.

We were at the beach a couple weeks ago and instead of doing baths, we decided to let DS shower with me after we got back from the beach.  After I turned the water off and was getting the towel for him, he squatted down (I thought he was just grabbing one of his toys) and then he says,"I go poo" and proceeded to poo!  I almost fell over in shock and (honestly) hysterics.  He's never told me he was going to poop (or pee for that matter) but since then, he has started to sporadically tell me when he is pooping or peeing.

Is this a sign that he's ready to start potty training? (I don't feel like I'm ready, but if he's ready I guess I better be!)

Re: "I go poo" (potty training question)

  • i worked in a toddler room for two and a half years, and did a looooot of potty training with a lot of kiddos in that time.  DS just turned a year, so i haven't trained my own kiddo yet, but based on what i've seen from other kids, i'd say it's a great sign that he's approaching being ready.  at 18 months, he's probably still a little young for gung-ho, full out potty training.  whenever i had a kiddo under 2 years who showed signs of being ready, i would just follow their lead and provide lots of encouragement and show tons of excitement.  i wouldn't do anything above and beyond that, however, until i saw an increase in frequency or interest.  if he tells you he's going to poop, ask him if he wants to sit on the potty, but don't necessarily ask him every 30 minutes if he needs to go or if he wants to sit.

i will tell you, the majority of the kids whose parents pushed them to train when they were under 2 did well for several months and then hit a major regression that almost always put them back in diapers for awhile.  i don't know if it was coincidence or not, but it was enough to convince me that i want to let my kid take the lead on potty training, at least at first.

  • It is a good sign! You can try it- we did the three day method at 19 months and worked like a charm. GL!
