Pillow or Blanket in Crib

Does anyone have a pillow or blanket in their child's crib?

Re: Pillow or Blanket in Crib

  • We have a light blanket. We were told by the Dr not to have anything else or a heavier blanket until 18-24 months.

  • We started using a crocheted blanket around 6mo. DD is 21mo and still doesn't have anything else except a couple of stuffed toys.

  • We started using a crocheted blanket a few weeks ago.  She also has a small stuffed giraffe in there.  She started with an A&A swaddle blanket at nap times, and after 2 or 3 months with no "blanket over the head" issues, we figured it was fine.  She typically crawls down to the bottom of the crib and sleeps on top of the blanket haha...

We have a crochet blanket and a small stuffed doll or dog. She wraps the blanket around her (this blanket is absolutely her lovey, she adores it) with a corner in each hand. She likes to lay with her back or side against the doll or dog, if they aren't there she scootches to the edge and ends up getting her leg stuck because she is looking for something to lie against.

DS didn't have a pillow until we switched to a big boy bed at 3 years.

  • Psa on the crocheted blankets: we used to use one with DD until one night some threads came loose and wrapped around two of her toes. They were purple! I know it was a freak accident but something to think about. Google hair tourniquet in babies.
  • Connor sleeps in a sleepsack but he also has a muslin swaddle blanket he snuggles to fall asleep with, when he is fully asleep I just take it away.

  • DS sleeps with an A&A security blanket and in footy PJ's. We have both thinner cotton ones and heavier fleece ones for when colder weather gets here. We will sometimes put a small blanket on him after he falls asleep. He seems to do just fine with it, the times it has gotten near his face it doesn't impair his breathing because it's thinner. We also have a small stuffed sheep that is pretty small, no bigger then his head. He ignores it most of the time but entertains him in the AM's when/if he wakes up before we do. We don't plan on using a heavier blanket or a pillow until after 18-24 months which was recommended by his doctor.

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • Around 8 months I noticed my LO was always curled up in a little ball while she slept so I started laying a blanket over her once she fell asleep. 3 months later that's progressed to her using the blanket as a pillow and/or her stuffed teddy bear. Anyone give their LO a pillow before the recommended 24 months? She uses her stuffed animal as a pillow every night, isn't that one of the signs that they're ready?
  • I'm fairly certain dd1 was less than 18 but more than 12 months when she got a pillow. She went from terror sleeper to "put down awake, waves night night, sleeps 13 hrs." She also had blankets and multiple stuffed animals that she insisted on.

I'm trying to decide when to give dd2 a pillow bc she loves snuggling with it in our bed when we are playing/reading. Probably around 16 months. She currently sleeps with a blanket.

Also, my gram made the pillow dd1 used and it was more rounded and firm which is why I was less worried. It wasn't a big fluffy bed pillow.

We're in the minority here, but DS started sleeping under a full size duvet with me at about six. Onths. He now sleeps under a full size sheepskin blanket and light duvet (we live in an old and cold house) with a few toys for when he wakes. He has never been much of a mover in his sleep so I feel comfortable with this arrangement for now.
  • For both our babies we started with a crocheted blanket at six months.  DD finally got a pillow when she moved into her 'big girl bed' when she was three.  But she probably had stuffed animals with her at around a year.  DS still just has his blanket.
  • Nada for my LO. He sleeps in a sleep sack when it's colder in the house...nothing else is in the crib, but I think if he had a lovey, I'd consider letting that stay with him.
  • DS sleeps in fleecy footie pajamas with an Angel Dear lovey. This is working well for us, at least for now.

  • My DS sleeps with a thin blanket (or two) and a stuffed animal. He likes to have the blanket over his face (freaks me out), but I tried to put him in a sleep sack and after a week of no sleep I caved and gave him the blanket back. I will always pull it away from him after he's completely asleep though. He also likes to lay with his head between his legs...so he was sitting up and just fell over...and uses the stuffed animal as a pillow. Again, it freaks me out, but it seems to work for him.

    This is adorable
  • DD got her blankie at maybe 12 months and a pillow at like 15 months.

DS is 10 months and sleeps with his blankie now.

Once they can change positions easily (roll both ways, sit up from lying on their own, etc.), I stop worrying about stuff in the crib.

  • My daughter has: lovey blanket, baby Tigger toy, pink seahorse that lights up and plays music and we use a Sleep Sack.  I too have been considering putting a pillow in there.  My grandparents bought her a HUGE 36" stuffed hedgehog that she will lay on in the living room and use as a pillow.  My main concern is that she would try to use the pillow in her crib to stay on and climb out.

I baby-sit and one of my clients has had a pillow in her son's crib since he was 11 months old.  He loves it

  • My son has had a blanket in his crib pretty much since the beginning, but he doesn't sleep under it, he sleeps on it.  It was a fuzzy one with a silky edge at the beginning and he would rub his cheek against it to fall asleep.  Now he prefers a thin thermal type cotton one.  Most mornings it is rolled in a ball on the other side of the crib, but when I check on him at night he is on his side and it is usually rolled up in a ball next to his belly with an arm over it.  Funny, I sleep in the same position!
  • We use a sleepsack, but he does have a little lovey in there and one of my t shirts. It helps him sleep through the night. I just added a small stuffed animal yesterday because it helps him go to sleep to play with it.

This is us (even the old and cold house! :) ). DS is currently almost 10 months and has had a blankie since he was very little and has done well, so we don't worry. He always wants a smaller one to hold at his face. Plus we have two stuffed animals in his crib: Eeyore and his dad's teddy bear from when he was little. And he has a sniffly nose at the moment, so he sleeps elevated on a pillow at bedtime right now, but he usually doesn't need one.
  • daughter uses a minky blanket that she loves and cuddles with in her crib. no pillow though, I have been conflicted over when to give her one too however.
