Conspiracy theory for you: AA does not expect any real purchase volume from their horrible/controversial shirts. But they put them out there because it drives traffic to the webpage where customers will possibly purchase a less controversial shirt. And maybe some loonies will purchase the controversial ones to be funny or ironic or whatever.

That is the only explanation that makes sense to me.
