Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Finger foods-

What is the best finger food to start with? It's been 4 years since I went through it with DD so I'm a bit rusty. I've got the Happy Baby Puffs on hand and tried one a week or two back and he gagged on it so I pulled it out of his mouth. But he had no hesitation to put it in his mouth...

And do you think the puffs are good, or just straight old Cheerios?

Re: Finger foods-

  • Anything soft is good like soft fruits, little bits of cheese or bread, shredded chicken or meat, eggs, pancakes, etc.  Gagging isn't choking and is actually a useful tool.  Their gag reflex is much closer to the front of their mouth than in older kids/adults and it's precisely so they get that warning signal BEFORE they get so far as to choke.

  • i think puffs are perfect and i feel comfortable because they melt in the babies mouth on their own. Cherrios i guess would do the same thing. eggs are nice and soft so thats something else thats easy. we also do pastina which is the little star pasta. not finger food but a thicker texture to get them used to chewing. if you do fuits just be careful of anything that has skin (including blueberries/grapes)
  • i give my DD baked sweet potato chips, baked soft apples, baked carrots, etc..soft mushy things

We did Puffs first, then steamed pears, baked squashes and sweet potatoes, and bananas.
