Gas or maybe UTI?

I'l preface this by saying that if DS doesn't seem better over the next couple of hours, I will be calling his doctor, but in the meantime, I thought I'd reach out here to see if anyone else's LO has had a similiar experience.

Late yesterday afternoon DS suddenly become almost inconsolable out of nowhere.  We watched him and realized it seemed as if he was getting waves of pain and kind of wincing/scrunching up when it happened.  These episodes went on for a little while before I finally chalked it up to it must be gas (he has never had a gas experience like this in 18 months but the waves of pain seemed to be similiar to what we, as adults, experience when we're having gas or an upset stomach), so we gave him some gas drops. They seemed to relieve him a little bit.  The waves started to come over longer stretches and were shorter when they hit.  Meanwhile, during all of this, DS is super clingy and seems like all energy was zapped for him. Over the course of the night, he seemed better but still not back to himself.  He would not eat, but eventually, he started to ask for water and drank a good bit of it, thankfully. We didn't give him another dose of gas drops, but figured we would give him another dose if we woke up in pain.  He slept through the night with no issues.

This morning, he slept a little later than normal but woke up his happy smiley self.  When he was eating breakfast, he had what looked like a little wave but recovered quickly.  He's eaten a little bit today but has been drinking water and some milk.  He's had a few more episodes this afternoon but again, very brief.  What I noticed today, though, was that he was actually grabbing at his diaper when it happened.  It hit me that maybe it wasn't gas and maybe it is something else, like a UTI.  I looked up the symptoms and he doesn't have most of them but I just thought there must be something to him grabbing his diaper vs grabbing his belly area but, then again, maybe they are one in the same to him.

Anyway, if you're read this far - thank you! Has anyone's LO had similiar symptoms, episodes? I'm wondering what it ended up being.  TIA for any help you can provide!
