Baby baths

Ok I want to know your routine for bathing. Where and how do you do it?
I had a foam insert thing for the kitchen sink that worked great for sponge baths but once his stump fell off and we tried to fill the sink with some water and put him in it, the damn foam thing just floats and LO wasn't heavy enough to weigh it down. So we switched to using one of those infant tubs in our big tub. It has a little sling type thing that he sits in and you can fill the tub with water. But when he's in the sling thing he barely is in the water. And he gets sooo cold! I feel horrible. I try putting a warm wet washcloth across his body while I bathe him but it doesn't really work. He ends up screaming cause he's cold and I try and get it done as fast as possible. I will admit this has resulted in my giving him only 1-2 baths a week at most because I feel so bad.

So what's your routine? Any suggestions for me to make this a little better for him? He's only 5 weeks so it's still like bathing a slippery wet noodle at this point.

Re: Baby baths

  • My LO is 8 weeks and we only do 2-3 baths a week, depending on blowouts...sometimes more! We also have the sling insert but she definitely sits in enough water to keep her warm. Can you fill the tub more so she's sitting in more water? When we were doing sponge baths, we used a space heater in the bathroom. I would start it 10 minutes before the bath so the room was really toasty...to the point I was hot but LO was warm enough being naked.

  • We bathe in an infant tub in the big tub. No sling thing, we line a bath towel. Fill it up so it covers his legs-ish and wash quickly. We bathe the twins every other night and the big one every night.

  • We have a little bath tub with a sling that we put in the kitchen sink. DH bathes her, and the sling works well for us. She isn't completely covered but we usually keep a wash cloth over her to keep her warm.

We were using this big plastic baby tub but we all hated it so I have started just taking her in the bathtub with me. She loves being directly in the warm water and has not cried once when we've done it this way, even when we get out to dry off.

I was nervous about her being to squirmy but she loved it and I am easily able to hold her with one hand and wash her with the other

ETA - I was looking into heated bathtubs that BRU makes but I think we are just going to keep doing it te way it's been working for us. Maybe look into one of those!

  • I have the blooming bath and use it in our kitchen sink. I keep a stream of warm water running on him so he's warm. He's 6 weeks now and he's heavy enough to weigh the flower down. I'm mobile so the link isn't clicky.

We also have the puj but I haven't used it yet.

    Good luck!
  • I turn the shower on and get the room warm and steamy. Then give her a bath in her whale tub in the bathroom. She loves it.

  • I was thinking about a space heater to warm the room. Maybe I'll try taking the sling thing off so that he sits more in the tub with the water. I was just trying to follow the directions that came with it but that's obviously not working for us! haha
Thanks for all your suggestions. I'm going to try again tonight :)

  • I use an infant tub on my kitchen table. We bathe every other day. LO absolutely loves bath time. I start (while he's still dressed) by washing his face and hair. I dry his hair, then take off his clothes and diaper, and wash his bum with the facecloth I previously used for his face. I put oil in the tub, and then put the sling thing in so it's really warm (the air would make it cool). I wash his body with a new facecloth / my hand, and let him enjoy his bath while bringing water all over his body to keep him warm.
Then I take him out, dry him off, and massage him.
  • We have a baby tub with the sling and then there is bump to keep her from sliding. Last night I took out sling and used bump. She loved that way better than sling. She liked splashing around.

We wash every other day on double sink countertop. I will sometimes turn shower on to heat up bathroom. Which helps with warmth and she loves the sound of water.
  • We had the sling. It sucked. My mom got us a different thing that sits in the infant tub. It's sturdier and DS lays at an incline. We put the infant tub in the big tub and use the main shower hand sprayer. First we hold him above the main tub, wash his hair, and use the handheld sprayer to wash the soap off. Then we take the diaper off and put him in the tub. We don't keep the infant tub plugged since we have the handheld sprayer constantly on his torso (and whatever parts we're washing at the time) keeping him warm. His feet stay warm since there is a little water at the end of the tub where the plug is supposed to go. Picture of tub with insert thing below

Like PP, I turn a space heater on in the bathroom. Our baby tub has an infant insert that keeps her from sliding down into the bottom part of the tub, but she's still actually sitting in the tub and in the water. She loves for me to pour the warm water over her. It keeps her warm and entertained.

ETA: I put her in the tub daily, but more as a routine thing. I only use soap every three days. The other days I just wipe her down with a wet cloth while she's in there and let her play in the water.

  • We have the tub that has a sling too. (Blue, from Target). DS is looong, we gave up the sling around 5-6 weeks. He loves bath time a lot, so we bathe him daily right now. I will probably go to 3 times per week soon, since it's getting cool and I don't want to dry him out!
  • I shower with him. He loves it, the steam and warm water help all of his muscles relax which Im sure, since he's growing so fast, are aching.

  • We bathe him every other day... We have the infant tub in the big tub and it also has the sling thing. I just constantly pour warm water over him while he's in there. And our sling thing is absorbent so I keep it warm with the warm water...

    My baby is ONE!!

  • My bathroom has a heat light so I turn that on and I run warm water in the sink and hold her in and let the water run on her. I do her bottom half every morning and evening after her poopsplosion and I will wash her hair and top half every other morning. I wait till she's wrapped in the towel to do her hair and face. Sometimes ill give her a towly bath all over but i hardly ever do a full bath on my own cuz she is heavy and slippery and doesn't like sitting in water yet. After she is towel covered I nurse her for a bit, burp her then dress her. I trie the sponge turtle tying in the tub once and she hated it, I think she still got cold
  • It sounds like we have the same tub. I agree with the space heater idea. I used a space heater last night for the first time, because the house was cold. First time in his life that he didn't cry during his bath.

  • I bathe baby in the bathroom sink. When he outgrows that he'll get a bath in the kitchen sink (cleaned before and after) and sometime around 7 months I'll start putting baby in the big tub. Sometimes I just wash baby's hair over the sink while he is dressed if that is getting oily.
  • We have a little chair thing that fits in the kitchen sink. Until she can sit up on her own we'll continue using that.

  • We started just taking LO in the shower w us. DH will get in and I'll hand him baby. Stand by with a towel when he's done. Think baby likes the shower much better than the tub.

Otherwise we have a little tub that goes in the big tub. We keep pouring water on him so he stays warm.
  • I've got the blue tub with a hammock type sling. The directions say to only fill the tub with an inch if water when using the sling, but when we did safe wasn't in water and froze. So now we fill the damn thing all the way up and she loves bathtime. We give her a tub bath every night bc she loves it . But only use soap a few times a week.

  • Ok I just took the plunge and bought a small space heater from Amazon. It should be here Wednesday. In the meantime I'm going to do what you guys suggest and try without the sling. We didn't buy the tub, it was a hand me down but I'm not thrilled with it. I also have a hand held shower thing so I will just try and keep it on him while I bathe. It's harder to do myself but I like bathing him during the day when the house is warmer. But with the space heater DH can help me at nights from now on. Thanks everyone!! :)

  • I am an STM and we shower. I figured this out with my first. My DH assists.

  • I love reading that some ladies bring baby into the shower with them , it sounds great! I think we might try this
  • We have this:

    https://www.diapers.com/p/summer-infant-fold-away-baby-bath-266363?site=CA&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc_D&utm_term=PJ-544&utm_campaign=GooglePLA&CAWELAID=1338716426&utm_content=pla&ca_sku=PJ-544&ca_gpa=pla&ca_kw={keyword}

We just didn't have a place to store a big bulky tub and I like the compact size. It works fine for LO because you can control how much the back support and bottom supports are raised so you make sure there is plenty of water in the thing to provide warmth. The problem is DD screams bloody murder when bath time is over and we take her out to dry her. Haven't figured out a solution for that yet!
  • We use the sling in the baby tub . Like another poster mentioned, we fill it up all the way, not just an inch or two of water. And DD likes her water very warm, not lukewarm. We wash her body, then dry her off and wrap her in the towel to do face and hair.

She only gets bathed 2-3 times a week now because that's how often DH is available to help and I'm scared to wash her alone.

  • I have always taken a bath with him and my other babies. It is so much easier to wash them and keep them warm. When he is a little more stable he will take showers with me or dh

  • He gets bathed in his baby bath tub. It has a shower insert that he loves. We bathe him and spray him with the shower. Then we dry him in the bathroom where it's still warm. He loves bath time!

I do this as well. I'm too scared to try showering, because he gets so slippery. I also nurse him when we're in the tub. He has never cried during a bath with me. I'm pretty sure he loves it.

  • We put the tub on the sink and put him in it on the sling. We don't fill the tub. We use the sprayer on the sink. We spray him, lather him and rinse. Then we swaddle him in a towel and stick his head under the faucet and wash his hair. He loves his hair being washed! I never thought to fill the tub. Bath time goes so quickly, he doesn't get cold. He absolutely loves bath time and sleeps so much better afterwards! We have been giving him a bath more frequently because we get longer stretches :D

  • We have a baby tub with infant sling.  As other PP do, we fill it so he's sitting in a little bit of water.  He loves bath time, so we don't worry about the rest of him being cold.  We put the tub on the counter in our bathroom between our dual sinks.  We bathe him 2-3 times a week.

  • We have a $9 plastic bath support from Walmart and put it in our apron sink, and I throw a cloth diaper or two on it for cushion support. DS loves bath time, it will even calm him down when he's full blown crying. We've starte doing it every night around 7 before bedtime, and we use oatmeal soap every 2 or 3 days and warm water on others.

  • For those of you that shower with your LO, how do you do that? I feel like I don't have enough hands to hold him and wash him down, get soap, etc. and if you're not with your SO, do you do it alone? How do you shower yourself and hold them?

This seems so logistically confusing to me! Lol
