Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Rise and Shine

My 8 month old has always been an early riser. I attribute some of it to the fact that 3 days a week when I work we have to get him up by 6:15 or 6:30 to leave for the babysitter. All this time he has really woken up by himself around 5:30 or so which was perfect because I could BF before going to work. Now that he is older I am just wondering, are we doomed to this early wake up call? Sometimes he goes back to sleep after I feed him, others he is wide awake for the day. I have tried letting him fuss in his crib a bit to see if he will go back down but it usually doesn't work. Any thoughts? I really shouldn't complain because he is pretty much sleeping through the night consistently (he goes down at 7pm) so I know he is getting enough sleep. Just thought I would see what you other mamma's have experienced. :)

Thanks!

Re: Rise and Shine

  • My son is up at 6am M-F. And 6am on the weekends; sometimes 7am (it's rare).  I think part of it is routine. Also, when a baby goes down at 7:00pm, you can't expect much more. Babies this age need about 14 hours of sleep per day, between night sleeping and naps. You're not going to get much more than 10 or 11 hours at night if he's napping well during the day.

He does tend to want a nap around 8:30, so I try not to wake up too well (no coffee!) and try to go back down with him for an hour or so around that time.

The days of sleeping in are OVER :)

  • DS1 was always an early riser. He was  up around 5-5:30 until he was about 13  months, and then he started "sleeping in" till maybe 6. He still is up by 6:30 at 3.5. Sometimes he'll sleep till 7 on no nap days, but that's about it.

  • DD who is 4.5 now is up at 6:30 on the weekends rearing to go, but 6:15 during the week when I have to get her ready for school is like a cage fight... And it doesn't matter if she goes to bed at normal time (8pm) or up late (11pm when we were traveling once)  But yeah, sleeping in is over. Depending on when DS goes to sleep and if he woke up in the middle of the night to eat, we can sometimes get him to sleep to 7:30 (like if he ate at 3am, or if he didn't wake to eat until 5:30, he would go right back down).

  • Thanks ladies! After hearing from others I didn't know if it was normal but good to hear it is! And I can't complain at least he's STTN right?!

  • Our DS very rarely sleeps past 7 AM. On school days (I teach), he is often awake between 4:30 and 5, but that's partially because I am awake and making some noise. If not, I wake him up between 5 and 5:30 to nurse him before work. Sometimes on the weekends he still wakes up around 5ish, and then he will often go back to sleep until 7:30 or so. We will sometimes keep him in the bed with us after that early-morning wake-up, which seems to help him sleep in better. Otherwise, he is up like clockwork when the sun comes up.
