Constipation

LO has been constipated all weekend and therefore major cranky pants. I've given her apple prune juice blend and warm baths, and she eats solids so she's had apples and bananas and she still only gets the tiniest turds and she's straining to go and I can tell it hurts. What else can I do to get the poop movin?

Re: Constipation

  • I've used Karo syrup in DS's bottle. It doesn't hurt them and usually gets things moving.

  • I could be wrong but I thought apples and bananas are binding...so you may want to stop those. My pedi said that anything that starts with a "p" will help get things moving. Peaches, pears, prunes, plums, etc... If she is straining real bad and actually producing turds you may want to call your pedi...

  • My LO did the same last weekend. I fed him prunes for dinner for three nights in a row and he was back to normal. Good luck.

  • I had never heard that about starting with "p". I would have thought the prune juice would do it. I also supplement with soy formula so that could be binding her up too

Apples and bananas do cause constipation. Prune juice should do the trick.. just prune juice though.. not a blend. Also, some water might be just as effective too.

  • Stay away from the bananas. Stick with pears and prunes. Also, try oatmeal cereal. It has a lot of fiber. It definitely helps my LO stay pretty regular.

  • thanks ladies, I'll keep trying.  she has been eating oatmeal from the start of solids.  I'll try peaches and get some just prune juice and I hope that does the trick.  She woke up every hour and 45 min last night because her bottome hurt  :(
  • Has anyone tried the liquid glycerin suppositories from the store?  The pedi said I could use a regular suppository and just sliver off a 1/4 but I would think the stuff made special for infants would be better and more closely measured, just didn't know if anyone had used them before?
  • We used the pedia lax liquid for our toddler. I liked that it came pre measured and in its own lubricated insertion device. It worked pretty quickly for us.

LO is 5 months old so I would think it should be safe.  At this point I want her to have a blow out, she hasn't pooped more than a few rabbit turds in a week!
  • Good luck!
