When to tell work question..

OK, here's my sitch:  I'm a contracted consultant and I work directly with a trade association.  They just had a round of lay offs and my job was saved mostly because I'm bringing in a lot of money for them right now-A LOT!  I work from home so I rarely have to make an appearance live and in person at their offices.  Because of the lay offs (and despite my earning power for them) I'm nervous that they'll cancel my contract when I tell them about PG.  Mostly because they probably assume that I won't be coming back afterwards.  BTW, I'm also a military wife and we'll be transferring next summer.  An option would be to take the work with me but I don't really want to (chasing down a 10YO and a newborn=not much time for work, not to mention the move itself).

NOTE-I need only to give them 30 days notice in my contract that I intend to cancel and vice versa.

So, I plan on not telling them for as long as possible.  We plan to have me quit in April.  Thoughts?

Re: When to tell work question..

  • I would hold off on telling. I blabbed right away in the beginning b/c I was freaking out and having a bad day. Big mistake. I wish I had held off so badly. I have gotten so much shit from one of my bosses about it and its really awkward when everyone you work with talks about it non stop and tells anyone and everyone who will listen. You tell one person and they tell the whole world, whether you want them to or not.  I wish I had told HR and thats it.

  • I don't see where there is a problem.  You want to continue working until you're ready to quit which is mid pregnancy it looks like and they won't know until you tell them.  Sounds like you have it pretty easy! :)
  • No problem...YET.  Just seeking feedback and possible experiences others may have had.  Hopefully it will be as easy as it sounds!
  • I am personally waiting to tell my workplace.  I know my materninty leave is really going to tick them off (we're short staffed...) anyway, I'm not sure if I will even come back... So I'm waiting a long time...

In regards to them cancelling your contract because your PG is illegal.  If they do that you would have a really nice lawsuit on them.

  • If you work from home it sounds like you have it made in the shade. There is no reason to tell them until you're ready to give notice.
