Bedsharers: bed rails for family bed

We have a king sleep number bed and I'm not keen on putting it on the floor. I'd like to use toddler bed rails. What do other non-floorbed bed sharers do?
If you use bed rails, do you have any tips on what type?
For our almost six month old (non crawling but wiggly) twins we currently have an AR Original Co-Sleeper on one side of the bed and an Ikea Gulliver crib (not side-carred) on the other side but we're outgrowing our system. After sleeping directly on the floor at my moms house this weekend with my kiddos I've decided I LOVE bed sharing with them but I need a safe plan that doesn't kill my back or damage our brand new sleep number mattress. (DH is willing to relocate to the guest room or more likely grab one of the twin mattresses from the guest room and pull it into our master bedroom so he can sleep near us until he feels better about their size and bed sharing with us)

Re: Bedsharers: bed rails for family bed

  • I have a guard rail on our king mattress and then keep a video monitor on her that I watch closely until I join her in bed. If she gets to rolling a bunch or moving in a position I don't like, I go in and reposition her. She is 9 months old and this has been working well so far. I do plan to move her to a crib eventually, but am not ready yet.

  • I had twins that shared beds with us until about 7 months or a little older and we stopped bc once they started crawling they refused to sleep with us and instead used the bed for a trampoline so they now sleep in their cribs and I think they sleep better there. If you don't sleep with them at naps I wouldn't leave the room for long bit otherwise we used boppy pillows for ours so they slept upright but it dangerous so u have to watch them
  • I'm not sure the name, but I think we use a Regala bedrail?  It does it's purpose to keep anyone from rolling off the bed.  However, my DS is all over the place in his sleep and will sometimes roll over ON TOP of me and I'm afraid he might do that with the rail one day.  I definitely have to be in the bed with him since our bed sits so high off the ground.

  • We used the ARC and have the Gulliver cribs, too!  We side-carred them and I would pull them into bed with me one at a time during the night until they were about 10 months old.  We have a queen size bed.  I loved sleeping with them both, especially after DH would get up and go to work!  I wanted to get bed rails too, but he thought it was time for them to go to their own room :(  In the mornings I still get some one on one snuggles, though.
  • Our mattress is pretty thick (maybe 18 inches) and we have about 5-6 inches or so that the bedrail covers past the mattress. DS has never rolled over it but I seem to be the one that sleeps next to it most of the time. I actually think the rail is better for ME and keeping me on the bed as opposed to DS.
