Help me help my kid poop.

Ds1 had horrible issues with pooping.

He has to poop. It's there, he just can't get it out. He's on 1tsp of Miralex twice a day already so this isn't a new issue for us.

He's pushing and pushing but he can't get it out. I've tried a warm bath, running around, rubbing his back and a suppository (which he just pushed out).

Anyone have any ideas? My heart is breaking, he's screaming that his bum hurts and he just can't get the monster out.

Re: Help me help my kid poop.

  • Will he drink prune juice? Has he been drinking water? Rub his belly, too.

  • When our son was having issues when he was a toddler our pediatrician recommended a liquid suppository.  It's called  Fleet Children's Pedia-Lax™ Liquid Glycerin Suppositories.  It worked miracles and within seconds so make sure you have him near the toilet or put a diaper on quick.

  • Is that a whole capful? When DS was 3 he got a capful twice a day.

Also our pediatrician prescribed Magnesium Citrate. Not the whole bottle but the pharmacist can help you with the dose. It's over the counter.

We also give concentrated apple juice and lots of fiber foods.

  • Reese loved dried fruits--dates, prunes and figs. Maybe those will help.

Also we put pureed prunes on her toast/waffles.

  • who put him on 1 tsp of Miralax?  As infants my kids were on a half a capful and at 2yrs 9month the doctors told us we could give DS1 the whole capful.

Maybe that 1 tsp just isn't enough.

This totally worked for DD when she was little. I second this rec!
  • @ToastieSimons maybe you're right. It was our pedi, I think I'll have to go back!

He's asleep now so I'm hoping after his nap we'll have better luck

  • @ToastieSimons did your kid need it once? Or daily? dS1 takes it everyday.

Miralax actually works best if taken everyday.  Our GI doctors and multiple pedi's have confirmed that you should start with the max dosage for weight (probably about a capful for a 2.75 yr old) give it to them daily until they are pooping regulary.  Slowly start lowering the dose every few days as long as they're pooping comfortably.

DS1 now has weaned off of it, but DS2 (15 mo) is on it regularly.

I was also told one full dose per day works better than smaller doses more often.  It allows a larger amount of water to be drawn into the intestines and colon at once and gives more lubrication to what is already in their and a better "push".

Our other go to is glycerin suppositories.
