Any meds to help with spit up?

DD2 has reflux but she is a happy spitter so doesn't seem to be in any pain from spitting up. We went for her 2 month checkup today and while she continues to gain weight, it is slow and her percentile keeps dropping on the growth chart. Pedi isn't overly concerned at this point. We tried Zantac but that didn't help with the spit up so we stopped that. We are now going to try Prevacid to see if that helps. Some days aren't so bad with the spit up and other days are horrible (today being one of those days). If your LO is a happy spitter, did any medications help minimize the spit up?

  • I guess I just worry that she isn't gaining enough weight. While the pedi isn't overly concerned, he said he would like to see her start going up on the growth charts instead of consistently dropping. This is just all new for me as DD1 didn't have this.

Even though it's hard, if the pedi isn't concerned, then you shouldn't be either. Give it some time and see if things improve. I kept hearing that the spit up would improve by 4-6 months old but that didn't happen for us!

Out of curiosity, did your DS have days where the spit up wasn't that bad and other days where it just seemed like everything was coming back up? This is the part I'm struggling with most!

  • Just FYI, Zantac and Prevacid will not keep LO from spitting up, it just helps with the pain caused by reflux.

  • Our DD2 is on Zantac for reflux and she still spits up constantly everyday. Our pedi told us that it won't help with the spit up just help with her reflux symptoms. She has it really bad where she will cry for hours after eating, arch her back while eating and has mucus that comes up and gags her. We really didn't want to place her on medication but we tried everything (Similac Alimentum, Dr. Browns bottles, rice cereal) and nothing worked for her. In the end babies spit up, sometimes a lot!!!
  • Okay, as I said before babies spit up, some more than others. She asked about babies being on medication and the medication taking care of the spit up and the answer is no, it won't take care of the spit up. It will only lessen the symptoms of the reflux.

Refulx and just spitting up a lot are 2 very different things but if the pedi isn't concerned about your LO's weight gain then why put her on meds?

I chose not to put DS on meds because it's not needed for a happy spitter. DS would literally spit up ALL DAY LONG (large amounts) and although it was messy, he wasn't in pain and gaining weight just fine. This went on until right before he turned 1.

I don't see the need in medicating my child unless it's absolutely necessary or it helped alleviate pain. Spitting up might be annoying but it's not a medical condition.

Reflux, by definition, is spitting up. GERD is when acid is involved and would require meds to help ease the pain.
Otherwise, I agree. Baby's spit. If your baby isn't in pain than you don't need to be medicating.

  • Are you formula feeding or breastfeeding? If you are formula feeding, my suggestion is to try a different formula. With DS, we went to a thinner formula, and he seemed to gulp it down, and would eat too much which would cause him to spit up. We then switched to a thicker formula and the spitting up stopped.

Unfortunately, I have no suggestions if you are breast feeding.

  • I agree with holding meds for a happy spitter.  My LO goes through tons of clothes and sometimes requires more frequent feeding. and while its a pain for me, he isn't bothered by it and is still maintaining an acceptable weight.  Try more frequent burping and swaddling during feedings.  Any time you give medications to an infant you are taxing an immature liver or kidney.  They will eventually grow out of it and the only time to be concerned is if baby is not gaining or if baby is very bothered by the spit up, indicating the presence of acid irritation.
  • If LO is a happy spitter, it is a laundry problem not a medicated problem. Keep baby upright for 30 minutes after each feeding, don't do tummy time for 45 minutes to an hour after, and burp baby often.
