Sleep issues. Help!

My LO is having sleep issues during the day recently. He's still sleeping very well at night but I'm concerned this might cross over at some point. He just turned 3 months old last week.

So it varies daily but he'll go through periods where he will sleep 5-10 mins or maybe 30 mins and then wake up fussing/crying. But he is so tired he can't keep his eyes open. He did this for 2 hours this morning. I've tried the bed, the swing and holding him. Nothing seems to work when he's doing this. Yesterday morning he was fine, he woke up and played on his floor gym, took a bath and then ate his bottle and took a 3 hour nap. (which sounds more like the norm used to be) But last night we went through the same thing as this morning. The previous day we did our normal morning routine and then he stayed awake from 1-7 pm. He started falling asleep about 2:30-3:00-ish but wouldn't stay asleep. And he was so tired! Overtired.

When he's awake, he's very happy and playful. But when he's tired, he's fussy and crying but won't stay asleep.  I'm just looking for some advice on what else to try please. TIA!

  • I should add that I've read so many articles about this topic that I think I'm more confused than when I started ..

  • I second Sahara, we utilized the HBB routine. When she first came home, Anna would fall asleep whenever and wherever if she was tired but she stopped doing that and we learned very quickly that all heck broke loose if she got overtired. Now, she eats to go to sleep which I have heard is a tough habit to break but it's the only way we can get her down when she would otherwise keep playing and eventually start screaming!

  • We have the book and DVD. And used it when he was younger. But he absolutely hates being swaddled now and gets hot sleeping in it. I will give it a try to see how it works now though. I'm willing to try again. We still do the shhh'ing and he does want his paci when he's going through this. Thanks for the advice. I am so at a loss right now.

  • Update: The swaddling worked for 6 minutes. He was getting really fussy so I swaddled him and gave him his binky and he passed out immediately. I was jumping for joy inside. Then, bam, eyes wide open. And boy was he mad when he woke up. He seriously hates having his hands in the swaddle. He let out a scream and was pushing. So I caved and let his arms out. Ugh!

But that being said, he did so much better this weekend. I'd have to say, I think it's my fault. I don't think I was putting him down early enough and he was getting overtired. My hubby put him down much faster and it went much better. He's so smart! LOL!! I think sometimes too much educational material overshadows common sense.

I guess I'm still really confused as to how much he should be sleeping and how much he should be awake. I'm trying to watch for the signs of him getting sleepy but it's not as easy as I thought it was. Any suggestions are welcomed!

    TIA

  • Im having the same problem with genesis she is 3 months old but i do the swaddle andgive her the paci and put her on the ccouch of course with something next to her and i put her in a side way position sometimes it works n other times it don't
  • We are doing better, for now. My little guy would stay awake playing until he was getting too tired. That's what our issue was. So now I start really looking for signs that he's getting sleepy about an hour after he wakes up. It's tricky. He doesn't rub his eyes and such. He just gets slower in his movements and will stare a lot. Then I will take him to his room right away, where he only sleeps. No playing in his room. We will rock and cuddle until he starts to fall asleep. Then I'll put him down while he's still awake but nearly asleep. He will usually bebop a few minutes and then fall asleep. Every now and again he will get real fussy and fight it but he's doing so much better. I thought because he was staying awake longer that it would be okay. Wrong!!! He usually is only awake from 30 mins to 2 hours tops. He may sleep 30 mins to 3 hours during the day. At night he goes anywhere from 4 to 8.5 hours, wake up to eat and then back asleep. I can't complain! He's my little miracle baby. :-)

  • Ps... He absolutely hates the swaddle. It just makes it worse because he gets so upset that his arms are stuck. But if it works for you, use it! He's always wanted his arms out, even in the NICU. He would break out time after time. I only swaddle after bath to get him warm then take it off.
