Are 2 year olds old enough for a pinata?

I was at Boswells and noticed they make a bunch of fun pinatas- do you think two year olds are old enough to get that they need to hit the pinata?

They also make one where you don't hit it but instead you each pull a string- there is one string attached to the bottom that will "magically" open the bottom. Of course, you don't know when or who will pull the right one. More appropriate for two year olds?

Or are they too young for either?

  • I would be afraid of 2 year olds swinging a large stick, blindfolded or not.

hehehe. True. What about the pull the string one? Or do you think the fact they can each only pull one string will be too tough of a concept and only cause tears?

  • I think it could be fun for a family party with kids of ages a little older, and everyone helped the two year old with the pinata. But a party of all two year olds, maybe not so good.
  • Nick hit a pinata at my cousin's party in November and it was quite scary.  He got the concept, but didn't quite understand not to hit anything else.
  • I've been to parties with the string one, and it's always a hit!

There are a LOT of strings, and they all got to pull 2, sometimes 3 before the magic one got picked... by then, they're so excited about the candy and stuff they forget that someone else got to "do it"

  • i think the string one is a cute idea but sort of anti-climactic for the kids who pull and nothing comes out.
  • Heather had one at Alex's party.  Garrison was in love with it because FINALLY it was something I was allowing him to swing his bat at!  He was less than 2 at the time.  The kids were not strong enough to break it open by hitting it.  If they made contact it only made Elmo swing all around!  I thought it was kinda fun but you would have to expect that they might not all do it, their might be tears when their turn is over, and they most likely will not be able to break it open by hitting it.  I would say get the one with strings and let them take turns hitting it.  Then they can pull the strings, everyone gets one and have them pull at the same time.

One of the twins in my playgroup had an Elmo pinata where you pulled strings. The kids didn't fight over it nor did any tantrums come of when nothing opened. (Of course it was the LAST string that opened the dang thing!) I think the string one would be fine...and fun! In any case, my girlfriend already had "goody" bags just in case the pinata failed miserably and ended up throwing a bunch of stuff on the ground and watched the kids go nuts. Wink

  • I kinda like the idea of just throwing some stuff on the ground for the kids!!! Give each parent a handful to toss  up in the air while the kids are in a circle in front of their parents. It'd be like a treasure hunt!
  • I think the string one would be a great idea. The hitting one's scare me, not just the hitting something part, but really from what I have seen most don't know when to STOP hitting. So a piece of candy falls kids go rushing in, and the kid is still swinging the bat. That makes me nervous.. the strings is a brilliant idea.
  • Have a large Mexican Family, Pinatas are a part of every party! But if it was just 2 year olds i would go for the string. Just due to the fact a 2 year old cant wack it hard enough to bust it.

  • My SIL has used the pull string one for both her kids starting at 1 years old. It's always been a hit and she only puts some of the candy in it. She puts the rest of the candy in bags and hands them out as soon as it breaks open. Each kids gets a bag of candy the and the candy on the floor is just extra for them.
  • I was going to do the string one for Ryan's party too - depends on if I can find one to go with our theme.   Are you doing candy or toys or both?  (I think I'll do both)
