13 month old terrible to get to sleep

Our DS used to go to sleep no problem at night--we would give him his bottle and then put him in the crib and he would fall asleep just fine on his own.  For the last two weeks, he is so hard to get down.  Once we put him in the crib he sits or stands straight up and starts screaming and cries for about 30 minutes.  We will go in after about 10 minutes to try to calm him down, but then it starts again.  Is anyone else experiencing this?  Is this a developmental thing?

Re: 13 month old terrible to get to sleep

  • My DD is 15 months old and she did the same thing recently. It lasted 5 nights before i let her CIO without going in. Going in makes her more upset. It only took the one night of letting her cry and she went back to her normal bedtime routine.

  • This may sound strange, but can you distinguish between his different cries? My DS has a whiney sounding cry he does when he's just tired and upset, but his "I seriously need something" cry escalates quickly and sounds almost frantic. Once I figured out the difference, it was a lot easier to decide when to respond and when to ignore it.

  • Also, it is perfectly normal for kids to take up to an hour or so to fall asleep. Especially around this age, when they are hitting major milestones and acquiring new language skills. It's not necessarily a problem you need to "fix", just let him have some space and quiet time to put himself to sleep (even if it involves a little screaming).

  • Our daughter just turned 1 today and for the last month we have been going through a sleep transition also. So far the best thing I have figured out (at least for her) was to alter her nap schedule some, and start her bedtime routine about 30 mins later than we had been, so she's actually showing sleepy signals before we start. It will all readjust eventually - it seems as soon as we figure out and get use to their little routines they go and switch them all up on us!
