Pregnant after IF

Questions about Heprin?

Hi ladies, coming in to ask some questions from IFV...

So had a talk with my RE on the phone this morning and he found some interesting things with some of my blood work we did last wed after my miscarriage. He said I have some blood clotting issues which are inherited by our parents. He said I will most likely need to be on Heprin as of next transfer. He said alot of long dr words I didn't understand and wanted to know if any of you know it have used Heprin during your pregnancy? What kind of success did you have and when do you start and stop the shots? It sounds like we will be doing them before FET even though he said they usually start six days after transfer. I need more info to all this new news and hoping you guys had some insight before I dr google all this! Thanks.

Re: Questions about Heprin?

  • Oh thanks for the info I will take all I can get. I can't remember the exact name but he mentioned something thrombosis... Said I would be on Heprin and there is more blood work he hasn't received back from the lab yet that needs to be looked over. He mentioned a dr in like Chicago or something that came up with the diagnosis a long time ago.. It all happened so fast in the conversation it was hard to keep up with the technical terms ya know! But thanks I will keep I mind what you mentioned.

  • I have Factor V Leiden which means I clot too quickly. I've been in Lovenox for all of my cycles including the brief round of Clomid that didn't work. For the pregnancy, ill be switching to heparin around 36 weeks unless they decide to schedule an induction. I don't know anything about heparin but the Lovenox isn't too bad.

  • I'll just sneak in since I had a lot of questions about this and I've been on Lovenox for a couple of weeks now.

I started Lovenox three days before my 5 day FET, and I'll be on it until the end if my OB follows my REs recommendation. This is my third pregnancy (none to term yet) and first on Lovenox- although my RE had me on baby aspirin for the second until 16 weeks when my OB took me off it.

So far I've had no side effects apart from the injection site bruises- it's not thinning my blood enough to make cuts troublesome- I actually sliced open the base of my thumb two weeks ago and I was terrified I'd have to go to the ER- but it clotted (although a little slower than usual) and healed just fine. So far the only difference between this pregnancy and the last two is a *lack* of spotting... but it's still early.

As for the mechanics of the shot itself. Yeah it burns. And yes worse than menopur. But it's tolerable. Don't rub after the shot. In fact avoid any kind of pressure on the injection site for 20min and you'll get tiny little eraser tip sized bruises instead of the giant grapefruit sized bruises I got the first week of treating it like my stims. No rubbing, even if it burns. Just dance around and say ow ow ow and try to remember how much giant bruises suck. Oh and give yourself at least 5-10cm between injection sites until the little bruises go away. Otherwise they can join together and make the big bruises.

Lovenox really isn't all that scary once you get past the initial googling :)

  • @karabear4409- you answered some questions I had on my mind as well :). I don't have my first OB appt until tomorrow, but was wondering about whether I would be considered high risk, if I need to see a hematologist, and how they would manage my lovenox around delivery time....thanks, all of this is sorta new to me bc I wasnt dx until July.

Also, the level down for appropriate heparin level is called Anti Xa :)

  • I have been on Lovenox (recently changed to Heparin) and aspirin this whole pregnancy.  I believe it was important in allowing for normal implantation and vascular development after having a history of recurrent loss and secondary infertility.  It was not the only issue, for me, however.

Not sure of your diagnosis, but for some women with coagulation abnormalities, Lovenox / Heparin + aspirin results in a higher live birth rate.  If your RE suggests it, I would certainly try it.
