Am I the only one who thinks it's weird to circumcise a son to look like their dad? I don't mean I disagree with circumcision, I literally mean comparing penises.
My mom had a boob job back in the day...I've never sat side by side with her comparing tits and wondering why mine don't look like that. Dunno, creeps me out a bit.
I'm not doing it so the baby will look like his daddy. I just feel more comfortable with my son having a Circumcision... But I do kinda think it's wired if that's the only reason why a women choices to do Circumcision.. My mom has a boob job too... Hers look better then mine... Makes me wanna get one sometimes
Looking at this from a different perspective... DH isn't circumcised (never had any problems or infections) and I really prefer it sexually. It provides natural lubrication and it's way easier and more fun to give a handjob.
Woah!! Didn't hold back at all!
.........
Nope! So many people talk about health and locker rooms with this topic but no one really talks about sex. And I think it's important </blockquote
I'm not talking about comparing penises or looking like their dad. I meant their thoughts on it and how they feel. HAve they experienced or met other guys that weren't, and their opinions. That's all its not a contest whose looks better but their comfort.
I'm dreading having this conversation with my husband. I don't want to circumcise and I'm sure he'll get defensive about it even though it obviously has nothing to do with his penis. My husband's circumcision was not done perfectly, so while there's no loss of function or aesthetics (in so much as penises can be aesthetically pleasing...) he definitely has a scar where there shouldn't be one. And I'm European, the USian reasons for circumcising are... weird.
It's a cosmetic procedure, one my child will be free to choose for himself when he's reached the age of reason.
I had my DS circumcised. Where I had him they used a bell where basically he wasn't cut just used a string and a plastic bell and it fell off the same time his umbilical cord stub did. No pain
FTR my husband and son have never compared penises. I hate this argument. If you want to circ fine but use science not some lame argument like I want him to look like daddy. My nephew is blond hair blue eyed and my bil is Hispanic, they don't look alike at all and my nephew at 7 seems okay with it.
OP, do you have a set out list of 'thought provoking' questions to ask for the whole pregnancy? Because you've used up gay marriage, abortion and circumcision just in one week.
I suggest formula/ breastmilk next. Its going to be AWESOME.
Coming up next...
-Breast feeding and formula
-Race and religion
-Vaccinations
-Autism
-Gender vs Sex
-Baby shower etiquette
-Gender roles
-Cake
Sadly enough the majority of these have already been discussed.

@paank, I'm totally with you! I prefer an uncircumsized penis to a circumsized one. It's too bad men can't make that decision for themselves more often.
We're doing it. My husband said the teasing isn't worth it if our son (if we have one) happens to be in gym class, sports, or any other situation like that. It is purely selfish and vain of us, but will will have it done. Our children will be born at the same hospital my bosses' children were and he said the doctors numb the penis and the kiddos were totally fine. He has two boys.
I have a 4 year old son who is circumcised and he definitely has looked at his penis and compared it to daddy's (who is also circumcised) I did leave it up to my husband with him mostly because I felt that made more sense and he was Adament about circumcising. I wasn't going to make this decision because to me I was more worried about breast feeding, sleeping habits, learning infant CPR, and many other things. I made the big decisions on almost everything and to me it made sense for the man to make this one. I did not watch but my husband did and they were gone maybe 10 minutes total. My son cried for a second and my husband said it was not bad at all to watch. They have changed things now and caring for a circumcised penis means you do absolutely nothing, it has a little ring that falls off when it's healed and you don't even put Vaseline on it. (At least my nephew who just had it done had this )
Okay, the super contrived hot button topics? Getting a little old.
That said... We are having a boy and have decided not to circumcise him. It's not a topic I feel ridiculously strong about (MUTILATION!) and I respect those who come down on either side, but I do think it's a decision that deserves some research.
It is not common practice in Canada. DS is not, it was never brought up by any of the nurses or doctors at the hospital he was born at. In fact I don't think they will even do it there. If this LO is a boy he will not be circ'ed.
Well those ladies who are looking for more controversial topics have no fear. I just pinned this thing about decisions to make for your newborn that honestly I didn't even know some of them were options. Including cord clamping, eye antibiotic, kangaroo care vs cleaning off and swaddling, hep b vaccine, hearing test, etc.

I think this is BS. I've asked DH about the whole locker room scenario, most guys aren't looking and certainly aren't talking about it. Plus, if the rate of circumcision is 50% or less, the teasing would be kind of pointless.
I think it's crappy you are admitting it's vain but oh well, lets lop off his foreskin anyway.
I think it is crappy too, but if there is no medical benefit for doing it then isn't just vanity for everyone else who chooses it? I am just calling myself out. My poor kids, huh?

Just because other people make poor decisions doesn't mean you have to.
That said, there are some studies that show that a circumcision can make it less likely to contract certain STDs, namely HIV. My issue is that these studies were mostly done in third world type settings and I don't think they're as applicable for the US or first world nations. That said the AAP doesn't recommend one or another any longer (I believe they did, then didn't, now say either?)
Most people, however, don't cite those studies they talk about the locker room/teasing, looking like dad, uncirc'ed penises looking weird, it's just what you do, etc. Some just don't know it's an option.
Of course, some are doing it b/c they're Jewish which is kind of totally different, IMO.
Very true, you're right. I wouldn't be doing it because other people are doing it, though. It is a decision my husband feels strongly about and I have educated myself on both sides enough to the conclusion that either way I will have a happy, healthy child. I am definitely opened minded enough to change my mind when the time comes. Thank you for your worry about my children

lol DH said the same thing. He is not circd and when I asked him if he got made fun of he looked at me like I had three heads. He was like guys would never admit to checking out another guys penis they would get hell for that. I don't care if you circ or don't but find a real reason other than my hubby told me to we are no longer in the 50s
Im not because i feel thats the you were meant to be born. I dont believe adam said "hey god can you do me a solid and snip the tip?" And as long as its taken care of properly he'll be fine. Plus DH isnt (TMI I know) and he is just fine i've never seen a penis any other way until porn lol.
LalaMama81, Why are you confused? Because I didn't state I did research? Research didn't lead me to a definitive conclusion. Our determining factor is my husband would like to, so we are. As far the question I asked that lead you to think I didn't do research, I don't remember asking any about circumcision.
I'm sorry. I was just answering OP question truthfully. I am glad others don't agree with me, all parenting is different. I completely agree with the way you think. I think It is great you and your husband agree. My husband and I agree, so if we have a boy that is what we do unless we decide differently.
My cousin in law got his circumsied but they didnt cut enough skinso he is like 1/2 and 1/2...how weird is that?(that i know that and that it wasnt cut all the way lol) DH is like i dont wanna see it but i wanna know how thats possible.

I circumcised my DS and if this ones a boy o plan too as well and I'm not in any way against ppl do choose not too but I freaking LOVE the way you put this! Hahaha seriously made my night!
I totally believe in to each his own but i think its funny when girls at work talk about how they dont like uncircumcised penis' and in my head i'm like my husband isnt.

I think it depends which province you're in, but yes, they're all under half of the population. From Wikipedia:
Percentage of mothers reporting having their male baby circumcised, by province and territory, Canada, 2006/2007 Newfoundland and Labrador * Prince Edward Island 39.2 Nova Scotia 6.8 New Brunswick 18.0 Quebec 12.3 Ontario 43.7 Manitoba 31.6 Saskatchewan 35.6 Alberta 44.3 British Columbia 30.2 Yukon * Northwest Territories 9.7 Nunavut *
Ok side note...how weird are some of our traditions when you really think about it? I look at my pierced ears every once in awhile and think how weird it is that I let someone punch holes in my body to hang pretty things from.
How exactly would a circ decrease chances of contracting HIV?? That makes NO sense and is not true. Also, as I said in the last circ debate, you do NOT have to pull back and clean anything! You should never do that, as it could cause infections. Where do these crazy rumors come from? Foreskin is self cleaning, like a vagina. No one should pull back the foreskin except the owner of the penis when he's like 13. K I got it out, I feel better now. and no DS is not circ'd and we will never be doing that to our baby.
it's our choice and others can do as they please.

I chose to circumcise my son. Of course letting him go back knowing what they were doing was hard, I cried! But I think I made a good decision.
My friends brother had to have a medically necessary circumcision in HIGH SCHOOL because of an infection or something. My mom worked in the nursing home and knew of old men who needed them because they had been unable to care for themselves! Obviously those are extreme situations and if you chose to not circumcise your sons they are probably going to be totally fine! But I'd rather know he's taken care if down there. Plus it's much less traumatizing to a newborn than it is to a 2 year old or 10 year old (or high schooler).
For those who missed the last debate on this: you obviously have to circumcise, because men don't know how to keep themselves clean since they are too busy hunting and being dirty manly men all the time. Except for @andrewsgal 's husband, because he's a metrosexual and likes to shower twice a day and possibly get manicures.
I don't think I look much like my mum or dad and I don't give a shit. Also my DS is not circ but his father is. Do you honestly think that in 10 years that conversation has come up? He doesn't inspect his fathers penis ever!!!! CREEPY.
I have no problem with people choosing to circumcise, I just cannot listen to ridiculous logic.
I can't even blame that rant on hormones cause I feel good today. That was all me.

Newest studies (April 2013) think that transmission risk is lower because the microbiome (types and mix of bacteria and other microbes) on circ and uncirc penises are different. The circ enivironment is less friendly to HIV (and possibly other STDs)
They do studies in African men because they are testing heterosexual transmission of HIV and HIV rates, heterosexual transmission, and split incidence of circumcision are all prevalent enough in that population to be able to draw conclusions.
This may not be a compelling reason to circ if you feel that HIV rates are low enough here that your son won't be exposed or are confident he will always use a condom. But the science of it is what it is.

Even though DH is circ'd when we both researched the issue there was no question we would never chose to do so for our son(s).
I'll find something
