bf/pumping question

I am pumping once a day to build up a freezer supply. I just pumped one side gave 2oz within five min...the other side immediately started tingling ( I guess my body is used to feeding both at once already) when I went to pump that side only 1/4 oz came out in five min. Is it this unbalanced when im feeding the girls. I do switch midfeed when i change them. Am I doing something wrong??!?! Ps weight gains have been fine so far but last night they ate and ate and ate!!!!

Re: bf/pumping question

  • In my experience pumping my left vs right was the same thing seemed like not much came out of that side but the other I could get tons more. However when he would nurse I know he was some how able to get a lot more than my pump was for what ever reason. It drove me nuts because I could see the milk in the corners of his mouth and hear him swallowing it all so I know it was there just for what ever reason both my manual and electric pumps could get as much as him. I'm betting it will be the same when my boys arrive in a few weeks when I start pumping again. I always knew he was going threw a growth spurt when I couldn't pry him off seemed like all I did all day long was feed him until he hit the 11 month mark and was eating more solids then those became few and far apart. As long as they are gaining you should be alright.

  • I exclusively pump and my right side always produces less than my left. I've asked an LC about it, friends, and even docs and it's totally normal. I don't know about how this affects nursing directly but thought you should at least know, as far as pumping - you're not doing anything wrong.

  • My right produces way more than my left when I pump. I tandem BF and switch each feeding and both are gaining well.

Babies are way more efficient than a pump and some boobs respond differently to a pump. Pumping output is not indicative whatsoever of what a baby is actually getting from you.
