Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toddler at the Gyn?

Has anyone taken an 18 month old with them to a Gyn appointment?  I may have to in a couple weeks, but I'm not sure if I may be completely crazy or not.  Is this a horrible idea??

Re: Toddler at the Gyn?

  • It's no big deal.  I had to take mine before when I was pg with #2.  Can you bring the stroller in so you can at least secure him during the main exam?

  • I wouldn't do it if you are getting a pap.  The exam rooms are not big enough for a stroller, a nurse and the doctor.  I even think the doctor's office doesn't allow it.

This is probably just your office.  My OB would definitely allow a toddler and the rooms are plenty big for a stroller.  In fact my OB's office has toys in each room for kids.

  • Stroller! Good idea! The room are pretty large so that is probably what I'll do; thanks!
  • I think it depends on your child.  I have one who at 18 months would have lost his mind sitting in the stroller and another that will play happily in the stroller for as long as we'd like (within reason).

  • I ended up taking my daughter because there was no one to watch her.  I kept her in the stroller initially, but my doc was running behind schedule so she got really fussy.  I asked if I could let her out in the room.  My doc said she was used to kids being in the room so she gave her access to a cupboard to play in while I had my exam.  Not ideal, but it did the trick.

  • the last time i went, the office staff and nursing techs offered to keep eva in their space while i was examined.  she had a blast saying hi to everyone
  • I usually just hold him on my tummy while they do the exam. I do not have ANY other child care options available for him. at. all. so he has to go with me to every single appointment. My doctor is fairly flexable and understands. if he has a fit during a visit the nurses are HAPPY to hold him in the nurses station :) they LOVE him.

  • I take DS to all my doctor's appointments because I don't have anybody to watch him. I always take plenty of toys and snacks. I leave him in the stroller most of the time so he doesn't get in to trouble.
  • If you have to you have to, I would without much thought. I'd bring a few special toys LO doesn't get much and a snack to keep busy while in main exam.

  • I say take your baby! I work at an OB/GYN ofc & we figure it out one way or another. Our docs dont mind babies in the room. Also, one of the nurses will offer to keep LO's occupied out of the room during an exam. Strollers are great too, just take some interesting toys. The actual exam is not very long to have to keep LO contained in there.

  • I've been to two different obgyns and neither one of them had nurses that would offer to occupy DS who is extremely active. He would never sit in a stroller that wasn't moving for longer than 2 minutes. He came with DH to my OB appointment recently and it was still hard to keep him happy with both of us there.

  • I called yesterday to ask if it was ok and she said that it was definitely not a problem.  So I feel better that I asked.  My appt is next week so I'm crossing my fingers it goes ok, I mean, the actual exam time is what, 5 minutes usually?  I feel like it's never long at all, so I'm sure DS will deal fine for a few.  ::crosses fingers::
