Laxative post c-section?

Hello!  (If you've had it with poop questions, feel free to move on!  :))I had a c-section on Friday evening, but had may last bowel movement Thursday.  So, it's been 6 days since.  I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with constipation post c-section and how long you waited before going.  I have been taking colace, but I'm wondering if there is a mild laxative that any of you have used.  I understand there have been lots of poop posts, but when I searched "laxative" the information was all random, so I thought I'd just go straight to anyone that feels like answering another poop question!  Thanks!

Re: Laxative post c-section?

  • I don't have any c section experience but I do with vaginal. I've been taking a stool softener for a week now 2-3 times a day. They give it to you at the hospital. It's common for you to become constipated after childbirth because of all the hormonal changes whether by vagnial or caesarean. I would suggest trying stool softeners today and juice too. If you don't go by tomorrow, then I would resort to a laxative. Good luck pooping!

  • I took miralax for a few days and was consistent with colace for about a week. It got me there eventually!

  • @AFwifelife Thank you for the recommendation.  I just looked it up and it seems like a great product!  I will definitely resort to that if I haven't gone in the very near future.
  • The hospital recommended Miralax for me. It works well.

  • I had a c-section..hospital didnt give me anything. I was scared to "go" at first but it was surprisingly not all that bad....considering i wasnt taking anything....no real point to this reply..other than it wasnt as bad as you would think it to be... :)
  • I had a c section with my first and had major constipation afterwards. I wish I had been taking a stool softener everyday like I did with this vaginal delivery. You can get one over the counter.
  • I had a csection.....what helped me was fiber and fruit. Of course I continued with colace but every morning I would also have raisin bran, apple juice, and some kind of fruit. As you can imagine, I had no trouble having a BM.
  • I had a C/S and tried everything...eventually I got the Fleet pediatric enema, worked great...good luck, I was 6 days out too and it was a togh one, felt like my incision was going to rip open...if I can give you advice (and this is TMI, but hey!...) Take a sanitary pad and hold the incision when you go...it will help!  good luck!!

  • Thanks everyone!  I had my husband go out and get me the Fleet glycerin.  Worked like magic! Now if I could just get the swelling in my feet to go down... :)
  • I had a c section too and was really constipated as well. I have been backed up since my surgery at midnight on Saturday. I drank coffee this am and it worked really well, making me want to run to the bathroom and go. It was the best feeling ever!!  I have also been on stool softeners which were given to me daily at the hospital but they weren't working. I suggest drinking strong coffee if you are constipated. ;)

  • I had this issue post csection, too. It took me 8 days...I would recommend taking something else NOW before it gets impacted and even harder to go. I was on dulcolax several times per day but adding in Miralax and hot tea a few times per day really got things moving. I promise it will happen!
  • I had a c-section as well, and didn't go for about a week after! I just kept taking stool softeners and it finally happened! It wasn't bad at all, and I felt sooo much better! I kept taking them for a few days after, just to be sure.

  • I had a c section had to stay in the hospital for three days but they wouldn't let me leave until i pooped. So I had 5 prune juices and ate a dish full of broccoli. And after sitting for three minutes was able to poop. So I would try prune juice before using laxatives.
  • It took me like a week to be able to poo. And god i felt so much better when I was able to!! Then it took like maybe two weeks and I was finally back to normal!
