1st appointment? 8 or 12 weeks?

I'm so jealous of all these stories of ladies who get appointments with their doc at 8 weeks and then on top of that get an ultrasound!

At my doctor, you don't go in till 12 weeks to hear the heartbeat, no ultrasound. Anyone else have to wait that long?! I want to tell my family and friends, but I really want to see/hear the heartbeat first.

Re: 1st appointment? 8 or 12 weeks?

  • No I have an ultrasound to confirm due date this week...so 5 weeks 3 days and my first appointment at 8 weeks
  • Loading the player...
  • 9 weeks but I don't think there will be an u/s.
  • I did IVF, & they calculate from the day of egg retrieval which was Sept 14. That would make me 4w3d today. The doc sent me a calendar, & they are doing my 1st ultra sound on Oct 14.
  • My first appt is at 9 weeks, but, tbh, I don't know if that's because that is standard or because I'm on a medication that causes a slightly higher chance in certain defects. I think I remember last time the nurse saying that your first appt isn't usually until your third month, which is a span from your 8th-the first day of your 12th week, so I guess doctor's just pick which they want to be standard.

I use this calendar to keep track of the weeks/months, lol. I couldn't figure out the proper months last time not realizing it was based on lunar months. https://www.justmommies.com/pregnancy_calendar.php

  • My first appointment is with the nurse at 6 weeks then I have an appointment for an ultrasound at 7 weeks to hear the heartbeat
  • My first appt is today at 4w3d. My OB is weird through. She always schedules right away. Probably do u/s at next appt in 3 weeks I'm guessing.
  • My first appointment is at 6 weeks, but my practice doesn't do ultrasounds unless there is a medical necessity.  I'll have the genetic testing and ultrasound done at 11-12 weeks and then the anatomy scan at 18-20 weeks.  That's it.

  • Ultrasound at 8 weeks which is standard for my OB.  They call it a dating ultrasound.

  • I see a midwife only, my first appt is at 8 weeks but I won't get an ultrasound til 20 weeks.
  • Yep, my OB does a dating ultrasound at 8 weeks, 12 weeks is the NST ultrasound, anatomy scan at 20.

  • My first appointment is at 8 weeks. My OB office schedules the first visit between 6-8 weeks. They do a "dating" US at 10 weeks, the NT scan at 12 (which is a bonus US), then anatomy scan between 18-20 weeks. I was overdue with DS so I had an US at 41 weeks which was awesome but because I was so far along and he was so big already it is difficult to see anything.

  • I go in at 8 weeks just for labs, health history, and what to expect with a nurse. Then I see my doctor at 10 weeks and Im guessing we will hear the heartbeat. I only get one ultrasound so I'm guessing it will be at my anatomy scan :( I hope she doesn't make me wait till 22 weeks or something crazy. I'll pay for an earlier gender scan for sure!
  • Since I've had multiple miscarriages they wanted me to come in today but I decided to wait until I'm 7 weeks
  • I go in at 8 weeks for all the first time stuff.  I see a NP first for history and a pap, then the dr. for an ultrasound.
  • I will be just about 8 weeks and will get an ultrasound.

  • Scratch that...they asked me to come in next week for a dating ultrasound.

  • With my first, we had the first Midwife appt at 10 weeks and an ultrasound at 20 weeks only.

This time I have an ultrasound at 7.5 weeks for dating and my first midwife appointment at 10-12 weeks.
  • My first dr. Appt is at 10 weeks and ill only hear the heartbeat... Last time with DD I got an u/s because I measured big. I get another at 20 weeks and then because I have high blood pressure, I get one really often and at 32 weeks on I get one once a week... Which is the only benefit of having high blood pressure!
  • It was at 8 weeks for DS but this time I go earlier because I'm high risk.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • 8 weeks is standard with my OB but due to my loss history, I'll have one at six weeks.

  • My first appointment will be at 8 weeks strictly due to the fact my ob is on holiday until then. Wish it were sooner. Patience isn't my strong point.
  • i had an appt to confirm pregnancy on tuesday with my regular dr, and i have my first ob appt on november 6th. later than last time when i went at like 5 or 6 weeks but for me it works, less appts to drag my kid to/find childcare for. last time i had another about 2 weeks after my first appt, that dr office was so weird.
this time i expect to at least hear the heartbeat at the first appt, maybe an ultrasound, but if not then ill get one about 2 weeks later to do the nuchal thing. by then the baby will look like a baby :) or a roast chicken...
  • With my last pregnancy, I had an appt at 6 weeks with my midwife to confirm pregnancy and do an initial exam, with a dating ultrasound a few days later because I'd had a chemical pregnancy the cycle before.  This pregnancy, due to my loss history, I've already had Hcg and progesterone blood draws and have an ultrasound and initial OB appt at 6.5 weeks.  My practice typically only does the anatomy scan ultrasound around 20 weeks unless there is a history of losses, health problems, or a question about dating.

  • I'm getting jealous of the people who go at 6 weeks. I go in at 10, I'm having a hard time waiting for that, I couldn't imagine waiting till 12! They do the vagina ultrasound at the 10 week appointment, my husbands least favorite thing :-). He said thankfully its a female doctor, he couldn't watch a man do it.

  • I think it depends on your doctor, and your health/pregnancy history. With DS they had me come in at 8 wks, and did an in office ultrasound to check for heartbeat. My pregnancy I lost the appt wasn't until 10 wks.
  • my appointment is on 10/11 so i'll be one day away from 6 wks. at that time!
i'll be getting more vials and vials of blood, and my first sonogram.
  • I go in on the 30th (9weeks) to have a dating u/s and talk to the nurse practictioner. Than I go back at 12 weeks to see the doctor and start the monthly visits.
  • With my last pregnancy I had an OB who say me at 6 weeks but I was also on Clomid so they may have been watching me more closely. I did have a vaginal u/s that first appointment.

This time around I am seeing a MW and she told me to make an appointment around 7 weeks. I don't know if there will be an u/s or not. I'm thinking yes by first impressions of this practice.

I go to see the doctor at my midwife practice for an u/s so that would be in the middle of week 9 :) cannot wait!! They say they typically like to see you between 7-11 weeks for the initial visit.

  • Because of my TTC history I went in at 4 wks 3 days and 5 weeks 2 days for blood work. At 5 weeks 6 days I had a transvaginal us to see the sac, pole and I go back at 6 wks 6 days to hopefully see the heartbeat. I cannot imagine waiting to 10 or 12 weeks for my first appointment!
  • I am going to a new OB because we just moved -- they schedule an appointment at 8 weeks which includes an u/s -- with my first they didn't do a routine ultrasound until 20 weeks!  I couldn't take it so requested one earlier.

  • I'm thinking it will just be like last time.  First doctor appointment between 6-7 weeks just for blood work.  Then dating ultra sound between 8-9 weeks at the lab and then another ultra sound at the doctors office between 10-11 weeks and to go over prior blood work and dating u/s and then the nt scan at 12 weeks.

  • Originally, I had my first appt. set for 9wks 2 days (which still stands) but I am going in on Thursday which will be 4 wks 5 days to discuss blood work and get an u/s to make sure it is not an ectopic...I have had spotting and cramping so Dr wants to confirm everything is good. Fingers crossed!

  • My first first appointment is at 6 weeks but it's mostly just for paperwork, a pap if needed, and to give you your due date. They don't do ultrasounds until the NT scan around 12 weeks unless there's an issue (I had one with DD2 around 6 weeks due to spotting). They also won't even attempt to listen for a heartbeat until 11 or 12 weeks.

  • I had my first appt w/ the NP for postive test and Medical Hx my next appt is on end of oct for more Medical Hx information, but my u/s isn't until Nov 27th!! which puts me around 12 weeks. I was hoping to get an u/s picture to share the news with my family and friends. BabyFetus Ticker'>.

  • Mine first appointment is not until 8 weeks. I know so doctors offices are different but for mine you don't get an ultrasound until 20-22 weeks unless you are considered higher risk so I am thankful to be considered low risk even it means not seeing my baby. Mine also doesn't do heartbeats until around the 12 week mark since it can be harder to detect before then and they don't want you to freak out. Last time I was around 11-12 weeks and it still took forever it seemed to locate DS. I was trying to not start crying when they finally found his hiding spot.

  • For those of you that had ultrasounds by 8 weeks 6 weeks, etc, does your insurance cover this? I thought most insurance plans only covered 1. Just curious!
