Whining

I know this is everyone's favorite toddler phase. Looking for suggestions/tips on how you handle it. Didnt know if there are so trying tricks out there that work.

    Whining is like nails on a chalkboard to me, so I started early and was pretty consistent.  DD was maybe about 2.5.  I sat her down one day when she was in a good mood and talked about how I noticed she was talking to me in a whiny voice.  I gave her some examples of what a 'big girl' voice sounds like and what a 'whiny' voice is.  She was able to differentiate between the two, so I knew I could start working with her.  

    When she would use a whiny voice I would remind her to use her big girl voice.  If after a few attempts if she was still whining I would just walk away and return after a minute or two so she could try again.  After a month or so I started using the simple phrase, 'try again'.  Now if she uses her whiny voice or forgets to say 'please' I just say, 'try again' and she does.  Whining has gotten infinitely better, so this approach worked well for us.  Good luck!

    Awesome! My son is 26 mos. so maybe he will really comprehend this idea soon.

    I am also still wondering if he really knows what whining is. As in when I say"stop whining".

    Early on (as in a couple months ago when he started using a whining voice) I would say "use your big boy voice like this ----, not your whining voice like this ----".  He caught on pretty quick.  He will still whine and I just say "big boy voice please" and if he keeps whining I ignore him until he catches on.

    Ditto encouraging the use of a big boy voice. If DS is whining I will tell him I can't understand him and he needs to use his big boy words.
