One syllable first name with a one Syllable last name?

Our last name is Brown, and it seems most if the names I like for boys are either one syllable or the NNs are one syllable. Is this bad? Seems kinda harsh I guess, saying:

Jack Brown
Max Brown
Jude Brown

My others lives right now are Milo, and Sullivan. I like Arlo but DH doesn't, and I met someone today named Rosco and thought that sounded nice. We're not yet so I am jumping the gun, but I love badness so it's Ok.

Finding something to go with Basil (DD) is hard!

  • I like it. Our LN is also one syllable and we will probably be going with a one syllable FN. I think all three of those names sounds really strong.

  • We have a one-syllable LN, too. I think it eliminates a lot of names, but I think the ones you listed sounded fine with Brown. I especially like Jude Brown.

Eh, it depends on the LN. But I tend to think "longer" one-syllable names (I know that's weird) work fine, like Wayne and James and Bruce---names that have the long vowel sound and/or longer consonant sounds (my linguistics class is failing me on terms right now), like S and blended consonant sounds like BR.

Some names that are the opposite of those still work (I think Jack sounds fine), but it seems like those always work with a short LN. Names like Jett or Elle usually feel really short or abrupt with a short LN.

We have other considerations, since our LN rhymes with a lot of names. I wouldn't think that would be as much of a problem with Brown. I also think that Brown falls into the "longer" one-syllable category, because of the blended consonant beginning and the long /ow/ sound in the middle, so names that don't work with my LN (Mae, Cole, Hank, Kirk) sound fine with yours.

  • I think Brown sounds good with almost any fn. I think Jack, Jude, and Max all work..

  • Two of my three kids go pretty much exclusively by one syllable nn's with their one syllable last. I agree with S&G about "longer" one syllable sounding names. My youngest has a very short sounding nn (Bea) and it's a bit abrupt, but nn's sometimes just happen!

I think all of your choices sound nice with Brown, and make a good sibset with Basil (who is adorable, btw!)

  • I agree with you that it's a little choppy. I adore Sullivan Brown though. I think that's adorable!

  • My maiden name is one syllable.  My father and mother both had one syllable names, and I went by a nickname that was one syllable.  So for me, having a first and last name with one syllable never seemed like a big deal.

  • We have a one-syllable last name and my BIL and FIL both have one-syllable first names. Never really thought about it. Though Milo Brown sounds like a cool kid!  ;)

  • I honestly think it sounds too curt. My husband has a one syllable last name and I've taken 1-syllable names I like (Rhett, Rhys) out of the running because of that.

You could always do a longer version of the names - like Jackson or Maxwell/Maximilian - and use the short form daily. Then his full name will still have a nicer flow, IMO. But I really like Milo!

What about Alistair, Lucas, Alonzo, Cary, Miles?

  • It seems I am way over thinking it. I just felt like the double one syllable sounded very short and harsh, but now after reading all the responses, I am feeling like maybe it's not as big a deal. I really do love Milo, and have a feeling that is what we would end up using if we had a boy, but am trying to think of other names I like too. I feel like Basil is a very hard name to pair with since it's so different, and using a fairly normal name might sound weird? I feel like we need to use something short9ish) and cute, not too long and fancy. I don't know... Maybe I am just crazy. Haha!

With Basil, we knew she was a girl and knew we would name her Basil from like the third week of pregnancy. So picking a name was never hard. I just have a hard time imagining calling a child by all these other names that I love. Probably be cause I am not actually pregnant yet, maybe it will feel easier once there is actually a baby to name. I just hope it does get easier, especially if we have a boy, because we could not agree on a "just in case" boys name for Basil if she turned out a boy. Girls names are just so much easier!

  • I have a one syllable last name too and do feel limited by it. One syllable fn sounds choppy with 1 syllable last names. I do like the names you have suggested.
