Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby will only sleep in upright position

So my DD is 1 week old today and has been great sleeper so far. However since my milk came in she has only been able to sleep in upright position in mine or DH arms. If we hold her horizontally she will still cry and be upset. Only upright position seems to work for her. If I lay her in her PNP after she is asleep she will start crying almost immediately after she is flat on her ack. Her face gets all red, she is crying and tries to pull her legs to her stomach. Does it sounds like acid reflux to you? I am FTM so completely clueless. I just want to help my baby, it seems she is in pain and so uncomfortable

Re: Baby will only sleep in upright position

  • we don't have an RNP. we got a swing and PNP at our shower and I figured it'll be enough. The swing is not very upright though and she doesnt seem to like it so far. She was sleeping like a champ for the first 4-5 days of life and only today and part of yesterday this issue started so naively I thought we were in the clear as far as sleeping on her back.

  • We are having the same issue. Unfortunately it hasn't been totally resolved so I don't have the perfect solution yet. We did go out and get a rock n play and he does a little bit better, he at least has a one to one and a half hour stretch at night. Make sure you get the deluxe one that vibrates if you do.

  • Are you swaddling your baby? i get my baby asleep in an upright position. Then, while keeping her on her side with pressure against her chest and arms, I swaddle. Then, I jiggle her on her side or upright until she is asleep. Then, I can put her on her back without the startle reflex kicking in.

  • DD did this and still does if she has even the tiniest burp that I couldn't get out.
I think the RnP is a good suggestion, or so I hear. And ask your pedi about reflux.
  • My baby has reflux and that's how it started although he was struggling w choking too. (Still is)
We started in the swing. The reflux slowly got worse to the point he still will only sleep up or in my arms.
I wish I could tell you it will go away but depending what is going on it will probably take time!
Be patient and enjoy the snuggles. Make sure to have some help and sneak in a baby free nap.
  • Definitely try the rock 'n play.  We started with the crib (which wasn't bad except he kept puking) and moved to the rock 'n play around 3 weeks due to reflux.  He sleeps like a champ in it - much better than in the crib, and hasn't puked in it once.  Your baby is still young so he/she will probably still wake up pretty frequently but hopefully being in a closer environment on an incline will help.  They're not too expensive, either.  We just picked one up at Walmart but I'm sure you could even get a used one if you need to.  The whole thing can be washed.  We have one that vibrates but we don't use that feature.
  • If you don't want to buy the RNP you can put some books under the feet on one end of your PNP and see if that helps. DD did have reflux and that's how we got her to sleep someplace other than our arms.
