a missed miscarriage?

Went in today for what was supposed to be just a standard check up at 10 weeks 5 days.  The midwife couldn't hear the heartbeat on doppler (thought we heard it for a second) so she had me get an ultrasound.  The baby measured at about 6 weeks 3 days and they couldn't find a heartbeat.  She said she wasn't too worried about the heartbeat if the baby is truly only six weeks, it may still be too early.  It does not make sense though that I'm only 6 weeks instead of 10.  So either I messed up the date of my last period, which I was using an app on my phone to keep track so I don't think so, or the embryo stopped growing at 6 weeks and my body just hasn't rejected it.  It's called a missed miscarriage.  They took blood for an hcg level today, and I go back on Thursday for another hcg level to compare.  So many things I don't understand!  My cycle is bit irregular and can go long sometimes, has been 38 days before, but 4 weeks off seems a little much.  But then I don't understand why my body hasn't rejected the embryo if it's been over 4weeks!     Here's hoping I somehow just messed up my LMP

I agree with pp. It's possible the dates were off, and if it's measuring that small you should follow up. 

I had a missed miscarriage. We discovered at 13w1d that baby only measured ~8wks. There was no doubt at that stage, so no follow up for me. I had to take meds to start the miscarriage and did that at 13w5d. I had brief spotting the day before but other than that my body hadn't tried to pass the embryo.

I was similar. Was 8-9 weeks but ultrasound measured the baby at 5-6 weeks with no heartbeat. I miscarried the next morning. I had spotted on Friday and nothing sat and then spotting again Sunday sent me to the er. I don't think it's necessarily a missed miscarriage I think that each women's body deals with this on its schedule. It took my body 3-4 weeks to start to show signs. Sorry your going through this and hope it is over soon.

I've had 2 missed m/c now. I was 12 weeks for the first one and baby measured 6w. No cramping, nothing. Same with this one except I monitor my pregnancies so closely now I wasn't going to let 12 weeks go by. By 7 weeks, we had 9 blood draws and 2 u/s. Right at 6w the levels started decreasing and my measurements were off. They thought maybe I ovulated late but I knew better. I followed my gut and I was right. I just took cytotec over the weekend to make my body expel all of the contents. A missed m/c is so traumatic on every level. I'm sorry you're dealing with us!

Basically, the same thing happened to me. I went for my first u/s at 7w3d and they told me I was measuring 5w. They said you are wrong about your period date and everything is fine. I knew there was no way I was off that much because I had been keeping track and we had been trying. Also, that would have put me getting a positive pregnancy test on the day I ovulated, which is impossible. The idiot doc said maybe your ovulation triggered a positive. I switched doctors and 2 weeks and 2 more u/s later, I had to take meds to start a miscarriage. The baby never grew past that 5 week mark. If you were trying to get pregnant and/or got a positive test somewhere in the first week or so after your period was due, I doubt that you are 4 weeks off. If you have no idea, then it might be ok. I will cross my fingers for you!

Thank you everyone for your stories and kind words, it does help to know I'm not alone.  Waiting is the worse!  If this is truly what is going on I just want it to happen and be done with so I can get back to trying again!  I love being pregnant, everyday was like a mini adventure and being able to wonder and imagine what was going on inside me and what the baby would be like, ugh this is just horrible.  I'll have to re program my fantasies I guess. I kept seeing myself all pregnant during Christmas with the family and then New Years and even St. Patrick's day!  I fell in love with the idea of having a spring baby... bleh what an emotional roller coaster this is

Well HCG levels dropped, going in tomorrow to discuss removal options with the doc

Wishing you nothing but the best and hope everything works out. Here's my story - I had a MMC 1 month ago when we went in at 12 weeks 5 days the baby was completely gone, there was nothing there but my body completely still thought it was pregnant. My HCG was still 37000 and my placenta was still growing so my hormones were still going strong and I was having all the symptoms of pregnancy. I had to have a D&C that day because my Dr said my body could possibly not get the memo for another week or so and she said I would bleed too much to naturally miscarry. I hope this is not what you are going through but just know that this is a place for great support and you are always welcome!

It's so annoying that your body can do that!  Why does it have to hold on for so long???  I think I'm def going the d&c route, sounds cleaner and quicker.  I just need to move on and start over when I can. I am so sorry for your loss, this really is a sucky thing to go through!

I'm so sorry for your loss. Hate that do many of us are going through it all. I too had big ideas and dreams of a New Year's gender reveal with our families, etc. Stinks.

Going in today for the d&c today, they gave me the option of letting it happen naturally, taking a pill or the procedure.  I just need to get this over and move on!  She said my period should return in 2-4 weeks then after that we can start trying again.  Looking forward to this!
