1st Trimester

1st Tri and working around construction

I am in my 1st tri and my current job requires that I walk through a construction area multiple times a day. My boss is not very willing to offer other options for me (at this time). What should I be worried about and what should I NOT be worried about? Thanks in advance.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

  • Joy, I don't know what is in the air and they have ladders in front of the door, power cables pulled taught that one has to step over them (personally, I think unsafe for anyone).

Why would this be a problem? I don't know that is why I am asking. Would it be?

  • Have you talked to your OB?  I would think it wouldn't be a problem, but  maybe wear a mask to be on the safe side?

This was my thought exactly :-)

Other than possible tripping hazards you mentioned, I don't see anything to be worried about.  I work in construction as a project manager and visited many a job site with my first pregnancy with no issues.  And I worked up until LO was born.  I was just extra careful on the site for tripping hazards and other potential dangers.  I would ask the guys to either tape the cords that cross the walkway down or to run them up over the door to eliminate tripping hazards.  Construction isn't that dangerous and in general, there are not really any hazardous chemicals used any more - especially with the movement toward green building.

  • I am pertty sure if there is anything potentially hazardous to pregnant women they have to make other accommodations for you.

I would wear a face mask and work like normal.

If women can breathe the smoggy air in NYC and LA and still have healthy babies, you have nothing to worry about from a single construction site. Think of all the housekeepers, hair stylists, and nail techs who work around chemicals every day, and daycare providers who spend their days stepping over and around toys and toddlers. Just walk carefully, watch your feet, and be aware of your surroundings.
