I don't belong here but...

I have a question and this may not even be the right place but maybe you all could help me anyways.  I am applying for a part time city job.  I am currently STAH and have been for a little over 2yrs.  I have my resume ready but my husband mentioned something about also sending a letter explaining why I haven't worked lately.  I don't think that is a good idea, but I would like to know what you all think? Should I send a cover letter? The ad just says to send resume but if it would give me bonus points I will send a cover letter as well. Thanks! I know this may seem like the dumbest question ever but my husband is insisting I ask his mom but I'd rather ask you all here.

  • Yes, send a cover letter and explain why you are re-entering the work force. Focus on the skills you can bring to the company.

  • Yes, send a cover letter. You will want to address gaps on your resume, but also highlight your relevant experience and strengths. A cover letter is a great tool to get the employer to focus on what you want them to and address any questions (in a very professional way). It's also an opportunity to highlight your writing skills.

  • To echo prior responses, YES, SEND A COVER LETTER! It doesn't necessarily add any 'bonus' points, but you don't want a potential employer speculating as to the reasons for unexplained gaps in your employment history. I'm not in HR, but our company's HR leaves the hiring up to us - I have never called anyone for an interview if they had unaddressed/unexplained gaps.

  • I have always been of the belief that a cover letter can be a very dangerous thing.  Keep it very short and sweet.  The longer the letter, the more room for errors and to say something that turns the interviewer off.  I can't tell you how many applicants I have turned down after reading  a cover letter that just didn't feel right or had a small error in it.
