If your water broke BEFORE you were at the hospital on its own, how did you know it had broken? Most women's water doesn't break until they're pushing or about to be, and about 10% experience water breaking before the onset of labor. Most of those only experience a small trickle. So if it's a small trickle how do you know it's amniotic fluid and not pee or discharge? Thanks!
With DS, I was actually getting out of bed and when I stood up I heard a pop and felt a gush. There was no mistaking my water had broke.
With DD, I actually was lying in bed reading on my side and I passed gas (classy ha) and felt a little wetness. I thought I must have urinated on myself so I got up and went to the bathroom. I didn't feel any leaking so I just changed underwear and went back to reading. I kept thinking about it so I got up and started walking and kept feeling small gushes so that's when I knew my water had broke.
I say that you pretty much know if you keep walking around and feel little gushes here and there because urine wouldn't be doing that.
I heardand felt a large pop in my belly, like a balloon being popped! Fluid gushed everywhere-there was no mistaking it. I've had three babies, and my water only broke on it's own once. The other times it broke when I was actually pushing/getting ready to push.
There was no mistaking what it was. It seemed like there must have been a gallon of fluid! There was no possible way you could ever pee that much. It also kept coming out. You'll know.
I had gone to my 38w appointment that afternoon and nothing was happening. I was barely a fingertip dilated and just barely effaced. I went back to work after the appointment. I got home from work and got out of my car, I was talking to DH in the garage and there was a little gush of liquid. I thought for sure I had wet my pants. I asked SIL what happened with her and she said it was everywhere and mine wasn't. I changed my underpants and put a pad on. I called and the nurse said to come into L&D to be checked since I was 38w. I got ready to go, we stopped and got dinner and some snacks at the grocery store. No extra gushes or leaks this whole time.
We got to the hospital about 2 hours after it happened and I was not having any contractions or other gushes. When I laid down to be checked there was another huge gush. Apparently when it broke his head came down and 'plugged' my cervix so no extra fluid came out until I laid down and his head moved back.

Because it just keeps coming! Mine wasn't a gush at first. When I sat on the toilet cause I thought I had Peed a bit it just kept dribbling out without me trying.... And it just kept 'leaking' I guess. That's when I knew it was my water.

I had been having contractions for a few hours so I took a bath to see if they would continue or not. I was getting out of the tub and felt a pop and (TMI) a little squirt of liquid then I went to put socks on and more squirted out. After that any time I moved I would feel a gush of water.
My water broke yesterday. There was a ton of it. It was a steady stream. And everytime I moved or changed positions it leaked more. It was almost as if I couldn't stop peeing.
I agree with those that say there is no mistaking it! I did not have the "pop", rather it was a gush when I stood up from lying down. When I changed underwear and underwear kept getting wet - I knew it was my water breaking - it just kept coming.
I was being adjusted at the chiropractors when I felt a lot of wetness. I immediately went to the bathroom and it continued leaking Onto the floor. Went home, laid down for a half hour and as soon as I stood up, I felt a gush again. Contractions started about an hour later.
I was showing a house to a buyer client. I went to the bathroom in the house (ok in the bathroom of the house) and when I stood up to pull up my pants I felt like I had just peed them. Our LO was so low that she acted like a cork most of the time - until I switched positions.
I went home, changed my pants a few times, decided 3 hours later that I was tired of leaking and we should head to the hospital. Good thing we did! We got to triage 3.5 hours after it broke and I wasn't feeling contractions. When they hooked me up, my contractions were 3 min apart - 20 minutes later I started to feel them. And bam! LO was born just 5.5 hours after arriving.
I rolled over in bed in the middle of the night and felt water trickle out. Then it kept trickling. Then I sat up and it kept trickling. Then I went to the bathroom and it started gushing out. Then it kept gushing every couple of minutes until a couple of hours later when he dropped lower and stopped it.
It's not a single gush. It's on going because your body keeps making fluids UNLESS the babies head it low enough to stop it.

This happened to me yesterday and I walked around all day thinking I was peeing on myself. Knew it could be fluid but I'm only 30w- so pee seemed more logical. Had a regular checkup yesterday and haven't been home since.

You will definitely know! With my first baby, I was actually getting up to go do something, and a gush of water just came out. Like everyone else said, it is almost like your peeing on yourself without any control over it. My water literally kept gushing out from the time I got up to the time I got to the hospital. The more water that came out the worse my contractions got. Remember though, everyone is different. Hope this helped!
Dd1 38+5 I went to the bathroom and realized i couldn't stop peeing.... Was basically induced and didn't get painful contractions for another 18hrs. Water was broken for 25hrs. Ugh Dd2 39 i was making breakfast 0830 and felt a little wetness, wondered all morning I'd my water had broke as there was intermittent wetness but not much and being as how i deliver babies at my hospital i was not going in of i was peeing on myself, contractions weren't uncomfortable until 2p, went to hospital at 330 and when i layed down it puddled for the first time, was still 2-3cm. Had her at 630. Hope to repeat my last delivery with this little man!

I rolled over in bed and felt an audible "pop" down low in my pelvic region. Thus began the never-ending gushing of amniotic fluid. No mistaking what happened then!
With my first it was an unmistakable gush. With my second I had a high leak and had small bursts of fluid. I went to L&D and they confirmed my water had broken.
I walked the dogs and when I made it inside, I felt continuous gushes so I ran to the bathroom and every time I moved or sat/stood up it kept happening.
FWIW, this was at 4:15 in the afternoon and he arrived at 2:35 am after 2 hours of pushing.
I was actually in a dead sleep when it happened and it woke me up, that's how obvious it was! It was a massive amount of fluid, no mistaking it. More and more fluid kept coming out with each contraction. I went through 2 bath towels in the car on the way to the hospital....and we didn't leave until an hour after my water initially broke. So I was just soaked...I know it's not that way for every woman but that's just my experience.
