Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Why is my baby constipated??

This is baby number two and he has been constipate for a few weeks now. He is 5 months old. I have been giving him oatmeal mixed with a fruit or veggie once a day. I also have been weaning him off breastmilk. Could it be the solids he is getting or the brand of formula.

  • Either.  Both.  Cereals can definitely be constipating and some formulas do that to some kids.  First I'd try introducing a "p" fruit and laying off the cereal for a bit.  P fruits help with constipation.

  • This! You might slow down on the cereal to see if its that.

  • Our little guy was having the same problem around 4-5 months of age, but he's only on Neosure formula.  We asked our pedi, thinking it might be the reflux meds he's on, and he said that it's just something that can happen to some babies around that age.  He recommended a little prune juice or organic apple juice to help with the constipation.
  • I had the same problem and changed several things at once which was dumb because I can't pinpoint what exactly helped, but it did get resolved... I only give one bottle a day but I switched formulas (Similac Sensitive to Gerber Good Start Gentle), I put cereal on hold and only give fruits & veggies now, and I started giving her prunes or peaches with breakfast most days.

I actually think the prunes have been the biggest help though, so I'd try that first. It seems to make a difference if she has prunes vs peaches with breakfast, but I don't want to give her the same thing every single day so I switch it up.
