Preemies

Second year

For those of you going into your second year or more of RSV season, what is your plan? We're struggling with the decision about whether to go on lockdown again or just be cautious.

My 29w4d boys are now almost 18m old. They have had a few minor colds this summer after we were on lockdown their entire first year. They have handled their colds like champs. Our pediatrician just shrugged when I asked her about lockdown and said its up to us. We have no evidence they have any current lung issues, but they have also never been tested. They did not qualify for synagis last year and definitely won't this year.

Re: Second year

  • We also had 30 week preemies, but by the time they were 18 months they were going to daycare at a home daycare 2 days/week.  We did stay totally home bound the first year except for doctors appointments, but were more lenient the 2nd year.  We just followed things like washing hands, not going anywhere someone is sick, etc.

  • We're in the same boat as you. We're just going to treat it like last year, full-on lock-down, just to be safe. DD2 came home on o2, so I just don't feel confident enough that they'll be "fine" if they catch something this year.

Next year, we'll definitely be getting out more -- hitting up public places, etc, with our doctors' blessings. But, just not this year yet.

  • We were way more relaxed the 2nd year especially since my boys were born in July and came home right before cold and flu season the first year.  It was just nearly impossible for us once they were mobile and out and about all the time.  Our pedi said by now there's really no need to be "extra cautious" because their immune systems are caught up and they have no lingering medical issues related to prematurity.  They have never been really sick aside from a cold or ear infection but I suspect if they caught something major like RSV, we and the medical staff would be even more cautious given their medical and preemie history.  I am going to make and effort to do lots of hand washing/santizing and wiping down stuff like shopping carts, but honestly with two toddlers you can only do so much to prevent it.
