Binkies

I am convinced DD is faking sickness and teething because she knows I want to take the pacifiers away. How and when did you do it? Cold turkey? How long did it take for them to get over it? We were doing really good at using them at night only, but she was sick lately and they crept back in as a comfort thing.

Re: Binkies

  • For DS1, we waited until he was maybe 1.5 yrs. He was only using it at naps and nighttime so I took it and told him no more paci. For a week he kept asking for it but then forgot about it.

  • Totally depends on the kid. My oldest DD was a little over 3 when she stopped using. I didn't have to take it away she just gave it up. But for her , that was the only way for us to go. I tried to take it away when the dr said to and I may have scarred her for life. With my twins, I took it away right before they turned 2 it took them 3 days to adjust. One of them still asks for it occasionally, but were good on that front.
  • We got rid of it just before 2 - it was just for sleeping before that. Each morning for 4 days I asked him to throw it in the trash. We talked each day counting down, he tossed the last one, cried for it at nap that day then never asked again. I know we got super lucky, and I do think if we had tried at an earlier age it wouldn't have gone well.

  • We ditched it at 2. He only had it in the crib, so it wasn't huge, but we did the bye bye binky, where you cut a little off every day until it is nothing. DS was in denial and every time I would point out "Oh, look, it's broken", he would say "Nooo, not broken. Gimme" so it eventually (after about a week of it being the tiniest nub) I just took it.
