Anyone use a pizza stone?

DH and I are making homemade pizzas tonight if he ever leaves work.  I got a pizza stone today for the occasion haha.  It says to get the stone hot first in the oven.  Then take it out and make your pizza on it and bake it.

Anyone use one?  Love them?  Hate them?  Pizza stone words of wisdom?

And while I'm at it...topping ideas?  I only got shredded cheese because DD was driving me bananas in the store, now I want to raid my pantry for random topping ideas.

  • I love my pizza stone! Don't use any oil on it; use cornmeal for non-stick. You can bake round loaves of bread on it too. I love pepperoni or sausage with olives and banana peppers.
  • I use one. I put it in the oven then preheat. I make my pizza on a piece of parchment paper and then I use a cookie sheet under the parchment to slide it onto and off of the stone. It has worked great!
Toppings: buffalo chicken, chicken ranch, fresh mozz and basil.
check out Annie's eats blog. She has a ton of pizza recipes.

  • I have one! Haven't used it in awhile! I may have to drag it out!

We put it in the oven while it preheats as well. Don't put a cold stone in a hot oven- the stone could fracture!

What toppings? oh man- I love spicy- jalapenos is a must- sausage, onion, olives, tomatoes, feta.

I just pinned a cauliflower pizza crust I want to try-- I'll be digging out the stone this coming week!
  • Oh my gosh, we love our pizza stone. We put ours on the BBQ while it heats up, make the pizzas on a pizza peel, and then transfer them to the stone to bake. The BBQ's high heat makes the pizzas amazing... but you have to have a good quality stone that can withstand the heat. So good!

Our go to pizza has the following toppings: homemade tomato sauce, meat of some kind (usually gypsy salami), pineapple, mushroom, red onion, yellow pepper, and cheese. If I'm feeling generous we'll sometimes also do roasted garlic, sauteed spinach, olives, basil, our home grown tomatoes, and specialty cheeses.
One other kind of pizza we've really been into lately is BBQ chicken... I just get a precooked rotisserie chicken from the store and shred it up, then use BBQ sauce instead of tomato sauce, and keep it simple with the other toppings. Awesome.

I only do pepperoni, I'm boring. But I'm interested in hearing pizza stone tips or loves/hates, I've been meaning to get one forever. </blockquot

Do it! Get one. Pizza was so yummy. I grabbed mine at the grocery store for $12, I'm sure there are fancier ones but it did the trick.

Thanks everyone for the topping ideas!

  • We have had many a pizza stone here. We always preheated and then transferred our pizza to it on the grill or in the oven. Unfortunately we've also broken every stone we've ever had and I finally told DH we can only use it in the oven under controlled heat. The grill always did us in, but it was sure tasty!
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I LOVE our pizza stone. Yes you put it in the oven while it's preheating.  We haven't used it in a long time though because we are hooked on PaPa Murphy's Pizza and you have to cook them on the paper plate they use under it.

  • We don't have a pizza stone but I NEED ONE for sure!!!

We also do our pizza on our BBQ pit outside so, about 500 degree hit over the coals.

We are actually having calzones tonight: italian sausage, spinach, and provolone. YUM!!

I also really like BBQ sauce instead of red sauce, leftover grilled chicken, green onions, fresh pineapple, and crushed red pepper flakes. I have also substituted flank steak leftover from steak fajitas and it was heavenly.

Do you have any deli meats? Those are great because they are thin and end up being really light and crisp! :)

  • The combination of pepperoni and feta is yummy on pizza.  And sometimes if I'm feeling super indulgent I'll make a "spaghetti pizza" like the ones I get once a year when we go visit DH's hometown.  Pizza as usual, but with a layer of spaghetti between the sauce and the cheese.

  • I love our pizza stone!  We put the stone in the oven while the oven gets up to temp, then we sprinkle cornmeal on it so the dough doesn't stick.
