Pregnant after 35

Numbness in Arms

Is anyone experiencing painful numbness in your arms? I am talking painful not pins n needles. If I sit or lay down. I can't sleep it wakes me up in tears. ( and I am super good with pain ) the doc says this is normal?? Chiropractor said it is all the excess weight from my chest & belly growing pulling down on my shoulder muscles.  I did not experience this when I was pregnant with my daughter. However that was 16 years ago! What a difference being pregnant at 19 & being pregnant again at 36 is!!!

Re: Numbness in Arms

  • I developed this when I was pregnant and unfortunately still struggle with it because of the strain of carrying my daughter around (she's almost 17 months now). It is related to the muscles and nerves in your neck and the front of your armpit, and radiates down the arm, causing pain and numbness. I have a good massage therapist that usually is able to help, at least for awhile. I haven't tried a chiropracter, but probably should do that too. Good luck, I hope yours goes away after the baby is born.

  • I've had trouble with this for a few months now. My chiropractor said it was related to fluid retention, and it should go away after delivery. Last week I started having similar issues with my legs during the night. Ah, the joys of pregnancy...
  • I have numbness in my left forearm and hand constantly. I also have a popping noise in my wrist. My OB nor my chiro could really explain it. I will say mine is not painful as it is annoying. None of my friends have gotten this before. From what I have read it will go away after delivery. If it does not, I will see a doc.

  • My arms have been fine but I woke up one morning with bad pain in both of my knees! It can't be from weight gain yet, and I didn't do anything out of the ordinary to strain them. If I am kneeling or even sitting in the car and have to get up it is really painful! I feel like I am 80 years old. I hope this is just a phase.

  • I had that with my 1st pregnancy. It was absolutely horrible. Dr told me it was pregnancy induced carpel tunnel due to the excess fluid retention. It happened primarily when I was laying / sitting down. Couldn't sleep, woke up in tears on a nightly basis. The minute my DS was born it went away. I'm 13 weeks and praying I don't get it this time around.

You can try wrist braces. They gave me some relief. Good luck! It will all be worth it in the end.
  • Yep, pregnancy induced carpal tunnel. Get the wrist braces. They work. Also limit salt and up your fluids. HTH!

  • My doctor did confirm it as carpel tunnel, and said in "most" cases it goes away after delivery. I apparently am an exception lol (only 10% of cases it doesn't go away) I had my son Elden Antonio on Christmas Day and am still having the carpel tunnel bad. But now just in one hand instead of two.
  • I feel like what your chiropractor said makes sense. I noticed I am having more shoulder/upper back pain esp. when laying down. Its as if my posture has totally changed. My hands fall asleep a lot when I sleep( I am a belly sleeper right now and do tuck them under pillow etc.) I remember with my son, I had a lot of numbness, aches in hands and arms at end and had also heard about the carpal tunnel issue. Hope it gets better.
